I have had an issue with oil consumption for the last couple of years. Using a quart every 500 hundred miles or so. Been using Mobil 1 the whole time. My mechanic said to try Liqui Moly. I havnt burnt a drop in over a 1000 miles so far. Engine sounds like silk. I dont post that often anymore but just wanted you guys to know. Highly recommend.

I read this isn't a true synthetic oil, not sure if it's true. Anyone else have excessive oil consumption? I have to add an extra quart about half way through my 10k oil change.

No. But without any idea of the mileage on the two above trucks it is a little difficult to judge the situation. There can be factors that cause oil consumption outside of just a high mile motor.....poor breather functionality is one.

I am jealous of the S600 there mmiller.....some day I will have a MB 12 in the garage....CL or S before I turn Mummy

Oil consumption

I look at the word "synthetic" as having little meaning beyond some subtle changes in the refining process. It sounds sexy and I use it in both cars because MB says to but that's the only reason.

What does amaze me is that after an oil change, when the oil life computer is reset (I have to do that, the oil change companies have no idea that it exists), both cars report 10,000 miles* available. For us it takes more than a year for the oil life number to run down to a 4 digit number, at which time I change the oil. I worry about doing this, having grown up in the days when the filling station attendant had to check the oil and water with every gas fill, and later the "3,000 mile" rule but the computer seems to work.

I have never had to add oil to either car between changes, the cars being a '99 ML320 at >70,000 miles and a '98 SL500 at >108,000 miles. I do worry a bit because the SL500 has an oil pressure gauge and it drops to 1 bar during hot idle, but it was that way when I bought it at around 60,000 miles. [Is this bad?]

I have my oil changed at one of those "quick change" places but usually bring in my own filter (gets me only $3.00 off the cost) and I only go to places that allow me to go into the pit to see what goes on.

I've only had two problems with those places - one stripped the drain plug on the SL and I had to yell and scream to get a guy to take his oil filter wrench off the SL oil filter housing . . . he was trying to un-screw it.

*I understand some MB cars may report in time remaining instead of miles. Anyone know about that?

Just for the record I used Arco Graphite in a custom built Buick Regal (with turbo). Crankshaft had to be replaced (under warranty) in about 10,000 miles, and the turbo burned up twice in 20,000 miles - shed all it's blades. (No engine harm, they were thin aluminum and were just digested by the engine and exhaust system.)

[That Regal was the first version, 6 cylinders, around 20 years ago. I didn't even know they were still making a Regal Turbo, thought they died long ago. Mine was custom built because I knew the dealer. Delivery took a while, the EPA had intercepted it and put 120 miles on it. Buick graciously added 120 miles to the warranty, but I didn't get a 1-2 mile car to drive.]

Just my personal opinion but the CL is nothing compared to the S. I will never buy a Mercedes that starts with a C. I would take a 95 S500 over a new CL63.

As the owner of the famed W140 S class ( it went to car heaven) who now owns a CLS 55 I must agree with mmiller619. There are significant differences in comfort, headroom, window sealing and somewhere I posted what I thought were the differences so I won't repeat here. The CLS is more for the hi performance oriented individual who likes turning heads and burning off a set of rear tires vs. the S which in my estimation is a true high speed luxury touring car. Just my opinion and no disrespect intended.

2003 W163 - uses a quart approx every 500 miles, as above. Current mileage 171,600....noticed this starting at about 130K. [not original owner ;)] On a trip to Austin TX & back, used three quarts, or about 650 miles/quart. I have heard that a series of frequent oil changes can clean out the accumulated crud that appears to cause the excess oil use [idep mechanic info] but the liqi moly seems to be worth a try! I've been using the 5W30 Mobil One with periodic use of Lucas synthetic oil treatment.

PS: I also had the EGR pipe cleaned out at about the 130K mark. ;)
