It's number 6, Mary. The fuse locations are on a card on the inside of the fuse box cover. If yu've lost yours, one's attached (from my 1990 420SEL - I believe they are the same). If you can't read it, PM me with your email address and I send you a higher-resolution version.

BTW, fequently they look go but are not, so try a new one.

Regards,
Dave

Mary,

If you've lost your instrument and dash illumination, the likely culprit is a malfunctioning rheostat (dimmer switch).

Try to turn the adjustment knob a few times to see if you can get the lights to work in any position.

To fix this you have to take the instrument cluster out.

Good luck.

I Tried the fuses and they were all fine so maybe it could be the dimmer switch. Is that the switck that adjusts the clock?
Nope, the other one on the left that resets the trip odometer.

Yes, Mary, twist it back and forth rapidly to see if you get a flicker. If not, it's a matter of pulling the instrument cluster to either replace or bypass it (after testing, of course, to see if you have power to the illumination). Plenty of posts on this subject in the forum.

Good Luck,
Dave

Had the same issue with my 500SEC; pulled out the instrument cluster, changed the 3W bulbs (got from performance products) and put it back. THe instrument illumination lights are working.

Had to turn the rheostat lever a few times; saw some dust coming out , everytime I turned. anyway, it started working after this.

Have plans to buy the white dials on offer in the ebay and change the dials.

BTW, the catalog from Performance products is very informative; from the gaskets for the engine to cosmetic products for Benz cars, man, they have a range of products on offer.

In the meanwhile, I want to have the temp. display for my 500SEC. It does not have one now.

I have the temp. sensor cable that leads upto the fuse box; there it connects to a two core cable.

What goes to the other end of this cable in the instrument cluster?

Any info will be appreciated.

TIA

It's a 'temp module display' about 3 1/2" X 3 1/2", pull one from an instrument cluster in a junkyard, ...and the 'plug in' cable with it that goes through the firewall to the fusebox.

Then post the installation procedure.

Here's a pic, it pops right out.

Perfect!

Thanks BNZ for the info and picture.

I will post the installation, once I have done.

Cheers
