I have 1997 E-420. I was gone for 2 weeks on business trip and car was park in my garage, came back yesterday and seen puddle of power steering fluid under my car.

I started the car and moved it out of garage to check it out. I can hear power steering pump sound when I turn the steering. I open the power steering fluid reservoir and found almost empty.

I have not gone under the car to check where the leak is. I looked from top of engine compartment and don't see any leak on steering fluid reservoir or around any other parts. Look like the leak is coming from under the car.

Can some one give me some feed back what is causing this leak??

I will put my car up this weekend and check it out.

Any one with any suggestion or feed back will be greatly appreciated.

This was the first problem I encountered when I bought this car. The o-ring in between pump and reservoir goes bad.

I put a new pump in with my personal mechanic in less than an hour.

The bigger problem here was that when the fluid leaked it would drip onto the serpentine belt, causing it to fray very quickly.

Haram,

After replenishing the fluid, and "burping" the system, I would get a can of brake cleaner and thoroughly clear off any residual oil.

It would also help to remove the "diaper" (undercarriage shielding) so you can directly visualize the bottom of the pump.

You could first just run the engine, and see if you can see a large leak. It might require driving a little bit and then re-checking.

Granted, I'm not sure if your E-420 is the same set-up as my 1999 S-420 M119 pump, but the radial seal where I had a leak is a common one.

Here's the re-build: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w140-s-class/1481425-photo-diy-steering-pump-overhaul.html

My two cents:

I was an avid buyer from Autohausaz.org until a little over a year ago when their shipping prices sharply increased. I'm not sure if its because I'm from Guam and shipping overseas is always more expensive or, they have raised shipping regardless of the packages destination.

o-ring between pump and resevoir is a very very common problem on virtually all High mileage M119. just be glad it isn't the air injection port passages also common for 97 M119 motor. This requires heads removal! (did mine last year)

I noticed two things about the power steering repair kit link: 1) The price has virtually doubled from $10. 2) There's a second O-ring(smaller black rim) included. It wasn't part of my kit I purchased two years ago.

Where does the second O-ring belong? G-AMG or others?
Like I mentioned in my DIY, there were "Leftover" seals which did not apply to my particular model. Just like the Oil Filer Kit..

Oh, and I just bought a Pump Overhaul kit for the P/S Pump today, and it was $12 bucks at the Dealer.

Power steering leaking pump is fixed

Thanks G-AMG. My leaking power steering pump is finally fixed. It was the front pump seal. All good now, no more leaky power steering fluid.
