Hey all, I recently got my first ticket after purchasing a radar detector (Passport 9500i) and it was due to a LIDAR device. I am now looking at buying a laser jammer for this car and wanted to know if anyone else had installed any and how successful they seemed. I did see 1 thread about the Laser Interceptor, which is one that I am seriously considering, but I wanted to know if anyone here has had any positive experiences with any of the less expensive devices, especially since the effectiveness of these devices apparently depends on the car. Any information on the matter would be helpful.
Thanks

PS. If anyone knows any good techniques to getting out of laser speeding tickets it would also be very helpful! (53 in a 30 on a rainy day...)

Can't help you with devices as they are illegal over her, punishable by having your car crushed.

As for the ticket, the best way to avoid the next one is lift your foot off. With respect, I am sure it is 30 for a reason - maybe children are around? And 53 in the rain is surely a bit irresponsible?:(

Sorry, maybe I am getting a bit old...

No you're right it does sound to be an irresponsible speed, that is unless you are familiar with central ave. here in Westchester. It's a 4 lane road in a commercial area no pedestrians around. The commercial stores are all in strip malls off to the side, much too far apart to walk in between. There are lights periodically, but even the buses are cruising in the mid 40s. Maybe 53 is a tad fast, but I really didn't even notice. I was just cruising along feeling good, about to get an estimate for a new bumper for my SL and then all of a sudden theres a cop in my rearview! Though you're right I should try to keep my speeds down, thats why I want the laser jammer though, just for times when I'm going fast unintentionally. I'm sure you've all been there where you look down at the speedo and its somehow magically 20mph higher than your intended rate of travel!

Many, many times indeed!

Which is one of the reasons why I will stay with Mercedes - for the speed limiter!
I do not think yours has the speed limiter, but for me it is worth its weight in gold and I am sure has saved me from may times when the speed gets away from you...

No, speed control - we have them on all Mbs from about 1996 on.

It uses the cruise control stalk, but push in the knob so that a yellow light illuminates on the stalk, and thenn whilst driving, pull the stalk down towards your knee and your current speed will show up in the speedo with 'LIM'. No matter what you do with the throttle or brake pedal, you will not exceed that speed. If you want to increase the limit, you flick the stalk up for 5mph increments or towards the wheel for 1mph increments.
The beauty of the limiter over cruise is that you can vary the speed up to the limit and use the brakes without having to reset.
To cancel the limiter, push the stalk down towards the dashboard. Kickdown also cancels it.
It works on the same principle as the F1 cars hitting a limiter in the pit lane, except it is flexible. I do not know of any other car that has this. Surely you have it on yours, no?

Wow that is a great feature that I was totally unaware of! I really could use it, ah well maybe on my next one.

Everyone knows that Laser Detection doesn't work accurately in the rain (has to do with light refraction from the added moisture), so that's how you beat the ticket.

23 miles over a posted 30 zone is a "tad fast"? Here that would probably net you a reckless driving ticket, not just speeding, even in an area like you are describing.

How about 63 in a 40? 83 in a 60? 98 in a 75? Are all of those just a "tad fast"?

Most cops will give you about ten percent depending on all of the circumstances. In rain they may not even give you that.

Do you have any idea how much stopping distance increases from 30 mph to 53 mph? And that's on DRY pavement? Moreover, remember it's not just what you can see and react to, other drivers aren't looking for people going that fast, and if they pull out in front of you because they weren't looking a half-mile up the road, you react, end up hitting them anyway, it's going to be your fault and at that speed you could end up killing or seriously injuring someone instead of having a minor accident as you would at 30-35. Even if it isn't your technical fault (dumb kid on a bike hops the curb goofing around, loses control, falls into the lane, you kill him completely by accident), you're still going to end up carrying a lot of guilt over that for a long, long time.

Seriously, dood, slow down, enjoy life, and you'll get to enjoy it for a lot longer.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I have both LI and Blinder J16 system. LI is the best but my Blinders did very well on personal independent test last month with another forum member.

LI has saved my from 4 speeding tickets. Well paid itself off already. I only run Blinders as backup in case LI breaks or needs repair. LIDAR gun failed to register speed on my car at all possible aim points. Blinder did the same except LIDAR gun got a speed reading on my driver side headlight at 250 feet which is very good.

Please visit radardetector.net and go visit speeding ticket thread and ask about how you can beat a LIDAR ticket. If possible, include the ticket showing at what distance you were tagged(This is very important!!!)

Do a search on my screen name "riverwabbit703" and you'll see my threads with pictures of LI and Blinders install on my car.

Interesting, I've never seen something like that in the USA.
My '98 has a speed limiter as Hal describes, when activated you just can't go above the selected speed. It's on the cruise control stalk BTW.
