Lane Assist Radar Sensor failure causes CAN bus malfunction

2014 E350 sedan. A few stoplights away from my house, the instrument cluster went crazy. Successive display messages: ABS/ESP/BAS/PRE-SAFE/Brake HOLD/COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST/ATTENTION ASSIST/Lane Keeping Assist/Blind Spot Assist is unavailable/inoperative due to a malfunction; most warning indicators light up (some intermittent) including parking brake; speedometer cycles up and down. Car goes into some sort of limp mode so I pull over. I am thinking a restart will clear the problem. But pushing the KEYLESS GO button will not shut off the engine! I pull the cover off the button for the first time ever, and insert the key. That stops the engine. A restart does not clear the faults. I drive slowly to the nearby dealer. As long as I keep the RPMs low, the engine and transmission work fine. I notice cruise control does not work, speedometer eventually becomes totally inoperative. Was raining, fortunately windshield wipers work fine. I eventually discover the trunk will not open using either the button on the door or the exterior button. Fortunately the key fob button works.

Service manager said a radar sensor in the rear bumper failed and "shorted" the bus. After replacing, everything tested fine. I would not have expected a failure of a module on the bus to take down the entire bus.

54484 CHASSIS CAN MALFUNCTION: L/R RADAR SENSOR SYSTEM/UNIT FAULTY VERIFIED CONCERN. CONNECTED BATTERY MAINTAINER, SDS, AND PERFORMED SHORT TEST; FOUND MULTIPLE FAULT/EVENT CODES LOGGED/STORED DURING SHORT TEEST (CHASSIS CAN AND/OR COMMUNICTATION MALFUNCTIONS/IMPLAUSIBILITIES). PERFORMED INDIVIDUAL TESTS/CHECKS OF CAN NETWORK; DETERMINED CHASSIS CAN IS NON-OPERATIONAL. REMOVED LEFT FRONT/DRIVER'S SEAT FLOORING CARPET/COVER TO GAIN ACCESS TO CHASSIS CAN DISTRIBUTION BLOCK (X30/30). PERFORMED INDIVIDUAL/ELECTRICAL TESTS/CHECKS OF DISTRIBUTION BLOCK (X30/30) AND CHASSIS CAN CONNECTORS; DETERMINED CONNECTOR 8 PINS 1 (CAN HIGH) AND 2 (CAN LOW) AND TRANSMITTING AT INCORRECT VOLTAGE LEVELS/SIGNALS. PERFORMED INDIVIDUAL/ELECTRICAL TESTS/CHECKS OF REAR BUMPER RADAR SENSORS (X30/30 CONNECTOR 8, X172/2, B29/4, B29/5) CAN CIRCUIT; DETERMINED L/R BUMPER RADAR SENSOR SYSTEM/UNIT IS FAULTY. REPLACED L/R REAR RADAR SENSOR UNIT (BLIND SPOT ASSIST SYSTEM) AND PERFORMED INITIALIZATION/PROGRAMMING AS NECESSARY. CLEARED FAULT CODES, ROAD TESTED VEHICLE, AND RECHECKED; NO RETURNING FAULTS /WARNINGS PRESENT AT THIS TIME.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but my car is currently at the dealership for this exact issue. I want anyone else searching for answers with this problem to have the best chance of finding them.

I have a 2014 E550, and my experience so far is documented here:

Hopefully this cross- post will help someone in the future.
