I'm not going to explain this again, so please read what I wrote last fall :http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/1405876-burnt-plastic-smell-car.html

Now, I didn't do anything to the car all winter, I would tackle it in the spring. Well, spring is finally here and I'm ready to get this fixed. (1) Now, I am wondering how to remove the passenger side kick panel, as I looked around and didn't see any way to remove it without destroying it. I have a bad feeling that I cannot remove it.
(2) So I came up with an alternate idea. What if I were to cut the ashtray wiring near the battery or regulator, whereever really as long as it is below the short. Would this stop the short? It's not like I smoke anyways and I would love to get my central locking working again.

Is there still new accessories hooked up to the circuit? Did you remove the addons?

If the accessories are still hooked up, then they are shorting or pulling to much load for the fuse.

If you removed the accessories and it is still blowing, then I assume the "smoke" was a connection frying and this could have caused a short somewhere in a harness.

Yes, if you knew where the short was, you could snip and tape off the wires to prevent any problem and replace the fuse without problem... but that is given that you can find the short & it is not previous in the circuit to other desired devices on the whole string.

So, if the short (burn out) is after some other harnesses, then you could snip it... but if the short is in a early branch of the harness, then it may not be as simple as just keeping the fuse blown.

Please note that the melt down could have affected other electronics on the fuse diagram and at any wiring point from fuse the box on through & to the other acc it branched to.

I am confused about cutting the wire near the battery or regulator since it seems completely out of the scope of this local problem. I would assume everything shorted at the first harness in from the cig lighter plug.

Next time, wire a small value in-line fuse prior to installing the lighting kits... or check to see if the cig adapter tip that might plug in is not shorting out before plugging into the Benzo :crybaby2:

Sounds like it sucks.

I would get a book or other DIY repair manual to see how to remove the dash a bit better. Maybe someone here has done a tear out...

Hope this helps!

I have not used the lighter since the strobe light thing last fall. Where is the first harness from the ashtray located? I could isolate the wiring that goes to the ashtray and cut it just above the harness.

I have not had to access the harness, so I do not know it's location exactly.

It could have just melted wire jacketing somewhere along the way... instead of the harness.

If you can find the problem, then you could cut and reroute wires fixing the whole issue & getting your cig adapter working again. This would allow you to use it to charge your phone or other items.

If you cut before the harness, note that all other items feeding out from the distibution harness will also be "cut"... meaning you could lose the central locking yet again.

I would say to set aside an hour or two & try to find the issue. Dealers would charge $300 for this elec rework issue, so it is still worth a look.

Hope this helps!

Ok, that definitely helps alot. But in order to look at the wiring closely I need to get to it, so, does anyone know how to remove the kick panel?

Sadly, I could only answer part of the question... that's really why I jumped into the thread. Plus, I had seen that you had not had many helpers of even your other thread.

I have a W203 & therefore could not competently give you advice on the panel removal of your W124.

I was just trying to assist with the part I could (the electrical part) & sadly can offer no help on the removal.

Wish I could! :surrender:

Good luck!
