Greetings,

I'm just wondering what keys originally came with a 1997 SL500. I'm guessing they didn't come with a valet key and just two regular keys?

There should be 5 keys : 2 switchblade w/transmitter, a regular Key, a (smaller) wallet key, and a valet key.

RKH is correct. look in your manual and it will tell you on one of the pages with pictures of the keys.

Thanks for the info! Guess I'm missing a few keys then. At least I have the two with the transmitters, although they look like they've seen better days. I suppose a dealer should be able to help me with replacement keys and transmitters.

yes a dealer will help you with replacing your keys. you just need proof of insurance and photo ID, or in Vancouver i need that. but i have heard a replacement transmitter key is about $250. so they don't come cheap.

they told me they needed it for VIN number and to match up the name from the ID. they are pretty paranoid about it when i went asking about keys.

Yeah, I can understand them wanting to verify details, but that's an odd one. I'd think they'd ask to see the title or something. For now I shall focus my efforts on some more critical details with my newly acquired SL, such as the leaking front latch hydraulic cylinders.

Yes, Klaus, I know about TopHydraulics - you'll probably hear from me very soon.

yes, just got new master key from dealer for my 98 SL500 I bought.
(only had one remote.)

$47 for master key or valet key.

$230 for new remote-

98 model has a chip in remote and the master/valet key-

otherwise the car starter will work but the engine wont start.

New master key last week cost $70, including taxes. $267 for a IR/Remote. The key arrived in a sealed envelope, precut and programmed. I do like the way MB keeps records.
