When you buy a brand new Mercedes, how many keys do you get? 4? 2 Masters or whatever you call them (the ones with the swithblade style retractable key, 1 valet, and 1 that opens all locks but doesn't start the car? How come when most people buy a used MB, they only get 1 main key?

I was told to get new keys I have to take the registration to a MB deal and order them. $140 for the main. Is that about the average price? How much do the other key cost? Can a dealer order the keys for me and get a better price?

I was at the dealer last week and asked about keys the older style key nonswitchblade is around 20.00 and the switchblade keys are in the hundred range. and they said they are not interchangeable so if you had the switchblade style you couldn't get the ordinary key or vice versa. It takes a few weeks for them to get it and if it's a euro model like mine even longer since they have to search for your vin and findout what key code they used for your particular car. that's security keys for ya.

Went to two local (NJ) dealers with Registration (VIN Number) and MY drivers license to get replacement keys on a recent purchase '91 . 350 SDL, Master key was about $20, and Valet key was $18. They use the VIN to identify the key format and is laser cut at MB site in Hanover, Maryland. Took three days for the result.
