Key Not Detected Message?

Hi Folks - My e350 formatic is not yet 4 months old. I purchased the p2 package chiefly for the 'Keyless Go'. For some reason, I'm getting the above message about once a week. This is annoying as it requires getting the key out of my pocket and popping out the start button. It seems to have gotten worse in cold weather. I even switched keys and have the same issue. I had a $30K Camry with keyless ignition that was flawless for 3 years...never had to remove the key from my pocket...except when I changed the battery after 2 years.

Anyone else experiencing this? Not yet worth a return to the dealer, but annoying.

This is probably a generic answer but since it's only 4 months old, take it back to the dealer for service since it is covered under warranty.

The key fob might need to be reprogrammed or the battery in the fob is faulty who knows.... Did you also try the 2nd key to see if the problem still exist? If not, then that particular key fob needs reprogramming.

I had same problem also. I removed push start button and started the car with the fob inserted. I have not had a problem since. I am not sure if this will work for you but, give it a try and see what happens. I did not have to replace the batteries.

I can't tell by your sig where you live but, as suggested above I would try new batteries. The batteries in the fobs are not special and don't require a trip to the dealer. I got duracell replacements at the local drug store (US). Very easy to replace.

With my 2011, I had the same key-less go problem 4 times within a month. The key would not open the doors or trunk. Used the key to get in, then key was not Detected. Locked then unlocked the doors from inside, then key was Detected. The car started but it would not shift out of Park. Started and stopped engine 3 times, then got it out of park. After 2 of these lock outs, the dealer could find no error codes. Taken to the dealer 2nd time after 2 more lock outs, the ignition switch and a trans module was replaced. No problem since! It's been a month. BTW, I tried both keys and got the same results. I removed the stop/start button and the car would start but still needed 3 tries to get the tranny out of park.

Had this happen maybe 3 times in the year I have had this benz. Found a couple of things, first I have 2 MBs with keyless go if both keys are in the same pocket its more apt to happen, second its not the key battery, when that is low a message low key battery will appear on the MFD. The last time it happened I removed the key from my pocket while sitting in the car and locked/unlocked the car with the key fob button and it then recognized the key.

Key Not Detected Message

Hi Folks - Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just start by replacing batteries. This is more of an annoyance than anything. When it happens, I can still operate my car with the Fob. However, although my car has been great, it's amazing that Mercedes may not have used fresh batteries in the fob.

Won't do you any good. The MFD will display when your FOB battery is low. Mine lasted a year. Interesting the Manual I believe shows 2 batteries in the FOB and mine have only one. My 2010 ML550 has two.

Key Not detected

Happened to me this week also...pulled the stopper out and used the key as directed....next day popped it back in and it was just fine. I think I jumped in the car too quickly and tried to start it up when it happened - it's been ok for now...but if it does happen again I'd suspect a battery change is in order.

Key Not Detected Message

Hi - For some reason mine has been working as advertised since my post here. I saw in the manual that you can test the battery...and mine is fine. There may also be some kind of electrical issue in my garage from my air compressor charger. Something to keep an eye on.

Key Problem

To the people on this thread the major problem to the key not detected is if you own an iphone or any kind of smart phone keep it away from your key the frequency is much stronger so it blocks the transmission of the frequency. Also people are complaining about the battery not lasting this is the same problem the key detects a frequency which acts as the "keyless go " when you have an Iphone or any smartphone near the key it constantly sends signals thinking its the car sending a frequency back but realistically its the PHONES which kills the battery...

You've stumbled onto a thread that's over 6 years old, but I believe the problem and solution may very well be the same as it was in 2011.

There are several responses to the original thread that talk about replacing batteries. Others mention keys, phones and other things in the same pocket that may have contributed to quicker battery failure, and still others compare battery life to Toyota car's battery life.

I've experienced as much as 5 Year battery life in my keyless-go Lexus, but from the beginning of my experience with battery life in my 212, the batteries last only 6-12 months. No explanation, but the keyless-go system in the 212 always responds to replacing the battery; even if it's only been 6 months or so. Try it. What have you to lose?

Hi everyone. Brand new to this forum. Looking into future potential headaches. I’m turning in my VW Passat TDI tomorrow and picking up its replacement Friday. I got a ‘14 E-250 BT 4MATIC and really looking forward to some fantastic road trips.

I use 2016 E220d w213 ,the same problem first happened to my car last week. I found the answer to solve this problem.
By removing the main battery positive (+) socket out and put it back again. Then the problem was all gone.!!!
My car can be started again amd the warning message has disappeared.
