Is there some place where you can send your key fob to have it repaired?

The key is mechanical with a transponder chip inside and does not require any battery. It should be able to open all locks and drive the car.
The Fob with battery is just a remote transmitter to unlock the doors and trunk etc.

My transponder failed, car would crank and never start. Had to get some valet keys made. Thought there was some other starting problem for awhile. This can't be fixed and I'm not sure the style of key that is in the fob is available any more. Anyway, would probably be ridiculously priced. Of course, the fob lock control has gradually degraded and has not worked for awhile.

I finally ponied up for a new IR key for my 1992. I was using regular keys for a while, but when I lost my last one I decided to pony up for the IR key. I hope I don't lose this one!

Check with the classic center.

for the 97 and maybe later years, not quite accurate. a regular key has a transponder in the key plastic. for the IR fob, there is a transponder in the IR remote housing. If it disappears, like when disassembly the IR remote, the car won't start. The transponder is small black chip in the housing.

You can get a regular key with a transponder for around $50

Your key-fob may be missing the chip? Buy a regular key, and cut out the chip out. Install it on your fob(cheaper way out of the problem)
