Heads up for anyone thinking they can score brand new unprogrammed keys for cheap, like that ebay listing:

Not gonna work, MB does NOT sell blank unprogrammed keys. All keys are shipped preprogrammed, and gen 4 square button keys like that ebay listing cannot be reprogrammed to another car. Gen 3 and older keys can be wiped and programmed, but they are not square button key fobs. Those keys that show up on ebay are programmed keys, but they have not been used/installed in the car that they were programmed for. That's why listing says "new" -- because that's true. But it's new key for that specific vehicle ONLY. It's useless to any other vehicle.

You have been warned.

Thanks to eveyone that responded for the assistance. I do really appreciate it.

I am sure I will have some other questions for all you experts in the months ahead.

Confirming a few things:

I have not seen key-dependent settings on a Mercedes, since the W220s ('00-'06) and the early W211s ('03-'06).

There are indeed two types of Mercedes keys (non-KG and KG), and there is no visual way to tell them apart, other than perhaps part#.

For KG keys, the dealer may need to do some programing between the key and the vehicle, so be sure to confirm whether labor cost (if applicable) is included in key price.

Congrats on your E-wagon purchase!

Schatzy62, I am looking to create a second key fob with KG. My vehicle only came w one complete KG key fob. I can confirm most of the technical statements above thru lots of Qs. This is what I can add:
a) I purchased a matching key fob from an online locksmith. I took the 'hidden' key blade that was a blank (be careful some sellers provide old keys that fit another car. a locksmith can not realistically cut a used key to fit your car. look at photos carefully) to a locksmith I know. He had the proper MB adapter and could not cut the key. He recommended an auto locksmith specialist who cut the key in two minutes. Fit perfect the first time. I needed a backup key to get into the car just in case i'm locked out.
b) My MY MB he could not program the key fob. He said dealer only. He added that he could program 2012's and earlier (including yours?) because the (electronic?) system is different. This has been indirectly verified at MB dealers. I did not ask if he was able to program KG vs non-KG.
c) my area dealers pricing varies very little. All request car, original key and ownership documents present.
I hope you are successful in getting the key setup the way you wish.

2014 and older. It is the 2015 and newer that are on FBS4 security/encryption and thus far nobody has cracked it yet. No equipment I know has the ability to calculate and generate key files for FBS4 encrypted EIS in the event of all keys lost (lose the only key to the car and call a locksmith to make a new one). FBS4 started in 2007 in W221 S550, but it was backwards compatible with FBS3, so as long as a key was available to the W221 EIS, you could calculate and program a new key. But lose all keys, and it's dealer time.

As of 2015 and up (that's when W205 C class, CLA and GLA were introduced), all MB switched over to FBS4 encryption.

So, get extra keys whenever possible, and don't lose them.

Deplore, I thought DAS4 was the newer system? Does that mean my 2014 is a) on the das4 system? b) that it might be programmable by an auto specialist who can program the "old" system? c) or, it IS the newer system and can not be programmed outside of a dealer? You probably know this...I have the facelift model. Thanks

FBS4 and DAS4 are different names for the same thing.

Your 212 is FBS3, same as 204. Locksmith can make key for it.
