So I just kind of have to share this with everyone, or no one depending on if anyone looks at it. It's also just a place for me to tally up all the work, time, and money put into this thing.

Things I've done
Bought a 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD with 350,000 miles on it -$100 and a laptop I paid $100 for

Replaced old vacuum tubing and reconnected a disconnected tube to the boost. -1 hour time, $10-$15 cost

Rack damper adjustment -30 minutes time, $55 cost

Fixed drivers seat spring issue with pool noodle -1 hour time, free pool noodle

Bought spare parts off a guy for $50. Included chrome wheelbase covers, new seats (which I didn't use), a new floor peddle, spare bulbs and taillight covers, and a new inside door handle plastic bit -Time installing 1 hour, $50

Took apart passenger door to try and fix control box for seat motors, now it moves up and down and forward and back but still no upper control. -1 hour 30 minutes

Bought Lubro Molly, Fuel Filters (Spin on and Primary), and new fuel lines, then ran a diesel purge. -1 hour time, $30

Replaced oil filter and changed oil. -1 hour time, $55

Reconditioned and polished all leather -3 hours, $10 for blue shoe cream and polish

Bought blue vinyl and had my wonderful grandma re-sew backseat headrest area -?? time, $15

Replaced motor mounts and fuel filler neck seal -3 hours 30 minutes time, $50

Replaced drivers seat with gray seat with better springs and splicing all the wires. Then replacing gray seat with old blue one after splicing failed. Then re-splicing wires to old blue seat -4 hours, no cost (listed above)

Fixed drivers side speaker that wasn't playing -30 minutes, no cost

Other odds and ends -2 hours, no cost

Total time -20 hours
Total cost -$380 plus a laptop

Still to do?
Maybe another diesel purge now that everything else is right.
Splice wires back to the trunk light (someone cut them)
Fix tachometer (not a priority, I already tried once..no luck)
Try to fix parking brake

That's all I can think of for now. Otherwise she drives beautifully, all the power windows and sun roof work, the seats are good, the outside is good and I can't think of anything else wrong.

Thanks for the help so far!

Also... any advice on a slightly rough shift? I've hard you can adjust the Bowden Cable, I think I'll try that first. Any other easy options?

Second, anyone have a proper photo of how the vacuum box should be connected? I can't find a photo anywhere and I don't know if mine is right. It has what... 5 holes or 4 and for some reason one is not connected to anything. Just wanted to make sure i have it hooked up right.

Third. Is it usual for the locks to all go slowly one after the other? Along with this I can only lock all the doors from the drivers side, the passengers side only locks itself. Is this typical?

Thanks for the help!

Good job.

We demand pictures of your car. The more the merrier.

Where in the world can you get a safe car for as little as what you have spent.

First off, awesome find.

Like every other 80's MB you have vacuum problems. The slow door locks is a guaranteed vacuum problem.. Hard shifting in a Mercedes is almost always one too. Id look for diagrams and start measuring how much line you need and what size. Mind as well replace them all to prevent further gremlins..
Sadly don't have any pictures for you but im sure there up here somewhere:D.

Id do a transmission and radiator fluid flush along w. new differential oil. Then speakers personally haha

Like you, a friend made a lucky find earlier this month, a thistle green last year 1985 model W123 300D with only 102K miles on it. WTF, a diesel with only 102K original, you ask? Well the car was laid up due to a tweaked front subframe, due to curbing in the 1990's. But wow, that has quite some POTENTIAL!

Same here for your 300SD here, I think it has GREAT potential,

So, post pics, take feedback, and act gingerly. You'll do just fine...

It's my first car period! I've driven my parents up till this point and now that I'm moved out and got a second job I needed a car (not just a bike like all last year).

I just messed with the Bowden Cable today and that fixed the rough shift. I still plan to investigate the vacuum leak but am happy the Bowden Cable fixed the shifting. I do have vacuum diagrams I got a few weeks ago from a mechanic so they might come in handy. Here are some pics.

Nice Ride!
Your first car???

When I was 16 my first car was a 1978 VW Rabbit C (Diesel). It had a 48hp motor as some of you know. When the A/C was on it had about 32hp leftover to propel that beast. And we did just fine.

You sir, have a pretty cool "Battle Wagon" there!

Spencer,

That is a great first car and it is fun for me to see the younger generation take an interest in these old cars and do what it takes to save them. Everyone should have a first car that requires a commitment from the owner to do some things for yourself and learn about the car.

Take a look at Leatherique products; you can find them on the 'net. They sell a kit containing a rejunvenating oil, a cleaner, crack filler, and dye for your leather seats. For less than a hundred bucks and several hours of your time, you can make those old faded seats look almost new again.

Keep up the good work!

Adios,
Mike

Can you elaborate on this? What exactly did you do to this cable and how does it affect shifting? I assume that you are talking about the kick-down cable and that it was out of adjustment and somehow making the transmission jerk(?) TIA.
