If you wanted to get really outrageous with it you could always make some big flares with an old oil drum. I've seen it done before with surprisingly good results, after some body work of course. There are also quite a few "universal" fender flares out there.

Not super big, maybe just a few inches. I looked into the universal flares, but not sure which one will work because the fender are to oddly shaped. Rear wheels are covered several inches and fronts are slanted. I also looked into fender rolling..kinda scary

Why? How wide of wheel do you want to use? Why?

Seriously don't hack the car apart to put some huge rims on it, unless you are running some major power the car will be all show and no go. 16x8 up front and 16x9 in back are as large as I'd go unless you want the car to look like a hommie owns it.

Good luck with it!

This was my original plan for the 280, opening the wheel wells, bringing the rear, lower, quarter panel down to match the rest of the the bottom of the car but with some tumblehome toward the bumper, but keeping the wheel flairs minimal so the tires were inside the body line. With the right offset, you could easily get 16X10's with 245's in there. Then I priced things: maybe in my next life.

Are you interested in flares like the old AMG 500slc rally? I'm not sure if they can be bought but they should be fairly easy to fab. Iv seen the pvc yard and garden strips used with good results as a core then fibreglass was layed over it to give it a production look it comes in various lengths but a 20 foot strip should do you. I'm not sure of its thickness 1/4 inch I think it's very tough yet can be molded to fit tight corners with use of a heat gun. Those giving you a hard time about it should look at the pictures of the 1980s era ralley cars that took the ralley world by storm 1st with a 450 slc with a stock set up 4.5 liter and auto trans then the next year's development with 500 slc with a manual trans and for 4 years I think they kicked all challengers to the curb. I think other teams and manufacturers tried getting them well that car banned from the sport Silver Arrow racing out of Belgium had one of their cars for sale.mI to intend to build a AMG styled 450Slc Iv got a solid car with the 4.5 liter V8 still in running order but it has set for some years and honestly I dont want to deal with mucking around getting it alive again so I'm gonna close with It sounds like a good deal. The purests problaby wont like to big a change but ITS yours and it always amazes me how people who don't know the person or anyhting will cuss you and call you names for wanting to change something on YOUR car as if your killing kicking a puppy or burning an orphanage down GOOD LUCK

I note in your profile that you have a 1985 wide body 500SEL. Was yours the one featured on a Wheeler Dealer episode????
That was an amazing restoration.
