Hello,

Just recently bought and old SEC 500. Well, the engine has more than 250k miles and soon or later it will need a repair (which is expensive). I thought that the best thing would be a new engine. I live in Europe and here's a huge amount of different engines but (!) - which engine should I take and which engine would fit under the hood?

I'm not a specialist, but there should be something from this list, am I right? Mercedes-Benz M119 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Waiting for your opinion. At the moment I'm thinking about this one (most popular choice): E 430 (V-8 M113, 4.266 cm³ 4.3L, 205 kW/279 PS/275 hp) 1998-2002 (from crashed w210 which is in a garage right now).

I just love the SEC body, and now I just need to do something about engine, then I guess... I should take a transmission either from the mentioned w210? Interior will be custom and the happiest thing is that SEC has no rust at all wich is perfect donor! :)

Thanks. I really need your advice!

P.S.
sorry for my bad English

A M113 transplant would be pretty involved and IMHO not worth the small horsepower gains. An Euro M117 5.0 would be the way to go if you'd like to get back on he road ASAP.

If your car is indeed a 1988, that's got the desirable 10:1 117.965 motor which is worth rebuilding...

Hm... And what about E55 AMG 1998 engine..? Will it fit?
If you think rebuilding a M117 5.0 motor is expensive, then this mod will be several times more. Its full of electronics and you'll probably need the transmission to it as well.

As the Dr said, dropping in an M113 is going to be a Monumental undertaking..the wiring/control units/modifying of sensors to Work on an SEC will be a HUGE amount of work. Plus, if you are going to go that far, I'd hunt down a M113 55K engine, about the same amount of work, but SIGNIFICANTLY more power.

You could go stand alone on the engine control and transmission which would IMHO, simplify things to a degree.. Either way you go, adapting a later engine is a major undertaking fraught w/ many unseen pitfalls. be prepared w/ plenty of Time and Money.

Even the m119 seems like it's a pricey and very involved swap. If I recall correctly, Jono, maybe someone else, once said you even have to hammer on the firewall for it to fit. If you really want hp gains with minimum work, wait around for a 5.6 with the famed option code 822 or one from a wrecked AMG or something, and hope that whoever has the engine doesn't know what they have.

Yup, even M119 is Rather involved.. But, you can stick w/ the 722.3 which makes things a Lot easier. @ this point I'd grab an LH car w/ a .3 and go stand alone fuel/ignition.

Autotronic seems to talk happy w/ Mercedes bits for what it's worth.

Thanks, guys. So the best (minimum money, work, risk and time) choice is to change the engine to identically with less mileage on it... Hm... Ok. Is it theoretically possible to gain some torque (and better economy?) switching to manual gearbox? Maybe you can even advice me what exactly brand/ or car has it? In this case I'll leave the 117.965. I already bought WALD kit, quad exhaust system now it just needs proper heart with transmission and then'll work with an interior :) Thanks guys for helping me! I appreciate it.

btw, is there any difference between 252hp (mine) and 265hp engine of EU 500 sec? As I know the only difference is a cat in a factory exhaust system which takes some power? Is it right? I have new cold air intake, new exhaust... is there anything else which would help me to increase car's torque? Right now I gave the engine for repairing - price -1000 euros.
