Gentlemen,

Just got a SL500 with all kinds of simple issues(for me). Wiring harness, seats, front suspension towers...

The top works fine up and down. Need to cycle-out the old hydraulic fluid.

This car the windows do not roll down when the door is open? Normal? Not Normal? If not normal, then how does one seal the door close? They do roll down for the top..

Here are some pictures, so I'm not a bloody liar too:D

VERY NICE. Congratulations , beautiful car.
I think my 1991 500SL drops the window a fraction of an inch automatically. I'll have to check..

Thank you,
How do you guys deal with the no-drop of the windows? I love that feature on my 95.

How do you close the door with the window up?

Early models never had the drop feature. The outer part of the seal is slightly shorter so you just shut the doors with the window up. Even after fitting a later Pano with the upgraded seals the door still shut ok with the windows up, I think this was the later seals getting less rigid after a few years.

The early W140's have the window drop...I would think that the early SL's have the same feature.

Taken from another site for the early drop:
Question
my 1993 sl500's drivers door won't drop down the 1/2" it's suppose to when you open the door. The drivers side works fine.

Answer
This will need to be taken to the dealership. Generally the problem can be solved by resetting the window points, but quite often, this feature can be disabled by a problem with the door open/close signal which will not be reset with the window reset feature.

Hopefully you can repair it with this resetting:
You will need to perform this on both of your windows.
Turn ignition to the accessories position..
open the window approx half way.
Press the switch to close the window, but do not press it all the way down(that would activate the one touch feature)
once window has closed, keep pressing on the switch for 10 seconds.
Release the switch and repeat the exact same procedure for rolling the window down.

Once you have completed this, your power window settings will be reset and this may repair your concern. If it does not, you will need to take it to the dealership.

window drop

This is very interesting. My 1993 SL500 does not drop either window( I never realised it should as my 1991 300 Sl-24 did not have this feature) however at the moment I often have to open the passenger window a bit before closing the door otherwise it fouls the seal(on the hardtop) then once the door is shut I close the window, so I will try the above and see if I can get it working, thanks, Jim.:smile

Mine's a late 94, (95MY) and doesn't drop. The seals work well, no leaks, squeaks or wind noise with either the hard top or soft top. (I thank Gummi Pflege for that)
So I don't really see the need for this feature, just something else to go wrong. :)

Incidentally it causes problems on Audi TTs (which have quite a weak regulator) the window freezes to the seal, go to open the door and the regulator breaks itself trying to open the window.

I will fix some of the issues this holiday week, and put in the new leather seats..

The only thing I hate of these old SL's are the seats. They do not have the sporty look...

I will post more pictures...

Jim, have you tried to adjust the position of the door glass so that it no longer fouls on the seal?
I did the glass adjustment last weekend as part of my attempt to stop the leak I had been experiencing. The drivers door window was sitting about 5mm low, and wasn’t touching the seal at all on it’s top edge, which led to the leak.
The adjustment is so easy to do, you wouldn’t believe.
You will need to remove the interior door panel to access the 3 adjustment bolts at the top of the door.
Then, using a socket wrench (10mm I think), slacken the bolts, adjust the glass until it just clears the seal, re-tighten bolts, put door trim back on and smile.
It is a very satisfying, easy fix.
:smile

Coming along...

The 93 is coming along, yet should be done in a week, but need to stop as I need to go to Vegas for a business deal tomorrow.. Here is what is cooking so far...

Seats were about $450 for both driver and passenger set, and they are all leather. Fixed the seat belt too with a new belt too.

Fixed the seat belt top cap too-You know that piece breaks...ABS melting glue does wonders. Check your local plastics store, or Model Airplane Hobby shop for ABS glue...

Enjoy,

Martin

Need help with the windows

These cars are funky with the door locks/windows/top/remote

This 93:

A) The top goes up and down great.. Windows roll down as they should- No problems

B) one can manually roll down each window(or roll up)- Great !!

C) Interesting, the remote works at night, but in the day I get nothing...

D) At night, I cannot roll the windows up with the remote, yet the door locks work(at night) with the remote. Am i missing something to set the windows? for this feature to work? I see some switches at the bottom of each door inside the panel. Do they have something to do with this?

I searched and I found nothing for this year? Helpppp....

Thank you,

Martin

Remote works at night but not in day time, could be because the IR signal is too weak in sun light.
Could be weak battery or dirty lens etc.

the switch at bottom of door is the window 'down' position sensor.

I'm out working on the car now, and at 7pm it was working(just the lock and un lock). Now at 8pm now it does not work ...

I Measured the batteries and they read 3.12 volts, but I will try a fresh pair. My other SL does the same crap...

Fill n the why's on these wonky door locks, but i would care to get the window roll up feature to work..How does one set that up? at the dealer?

'93 SL500 is candidate for the bio-degrading wiring, have you addressed that issue for your car yet ?

Yes, it has a 2006 Delphi revised harness for the R129...

I fiddled with the remote...

a) New cells 1 to 2 foot range, yet same as what it was doing before...

b) toying with remote(unlocking-locking the car) ON THESE CARS, one has to wait 30 to 60 seconds if one wants to change from locking to unlocking(or vice versa), on my W140's (old or new) one can go from locking to unlocking in a second or two of time... Is that normal?

How does one program the windows to roll up? does this car do it? I saw that R129 instruction video, and it looks like it is possible, or is it for a later year cars?

Thanks,

Martin
