I posted over in this thread about an issue I was having with the oil filter cover. I decided to try and find a replacement pre-emptively in case I couldn't correct the issue with the one I have.

So I start calling around, and run into the same problem I usually have; there's no such thing as a decent junkyard in this area anymore. Everyone's become an "auto recycler," or a "used parts specialist." I noticed this started happening about 10 - 12 years ago; yards started stripping cars themselves, and crushing anything that was over 15 years old. Then you could call around and find some places that hadn't drank the Kool-Aid yet, but now it seems to be a lost cause.

After yesterday afternoon and this morning on the phone, I couldn't find a place within 100 miles that either 1) Had anything built before 1992, or 2) Wasn't part of the exact same used parts "network" and using the same inventory software.

#2 is particularly frustrating because when you try and describe the part, and that it was used in more than one model over a span of several years, the places cut you off and demand a year and a model, and then tell you they don't have the part. That's because the software (that they all use) is supposed to find "interchangeable" parts, but the issue is it doesn't have the part I need in the list, so it's always a "we don't have it." The few places that would even bother listening to me would end up with the situation in #1; "we don't really have anything that old."

The one place I could find in Ocala (about an hour and a half away) that wasn't part of the same parts network told me he had a complete engine from an '85 300D but that he "didn't part out engines." So much for that.

Anyways, a little off-topic, but just came here to vent. I'll probably get a price from the dealership but I'm sure it will be astronomical compared to what should be a $30-$50 junkyard part. Grrrr.

Somebody parting a car out should be able to get you the part you need.
I've got an extra cover and an extra oil filter housing, complete. Got the cover when I thought I might need to install an aftermarket oil pressure sender and the housing when I replaced mine with one off an SD for clearance issues on a swap. PM me if you're interested.

You're right, of course, and I really should check here first. This forum has been awesome for information and friendly people. I just get all pissed when I call the junkyards these days; not even just for this car. More of a general rant.

I am interested, and I will send the message. Thanks! ;)

Junkyards, while always notoriously seedy, have gotten much worse within the past several years. When I got my first car less than ten years ago there was an awesome yard that would either let you wander and pick it yourself or take you out in the shop truck and get the part for you. No admission charge. Now, the only pick your part type places around me either keep no inventory or the inventory is rarely updated, and the management are always nefarious assholes. The other places rip the cars apart hastily and overcharge like crazy. All the parts I've needed where a new part wasn't necessary, I've gotten from guys on here. I'd much rather have them make a few bucks off me than any yard around me.

Out here we have Pick Your Part Auto Wrecking | Used Auto Parts ? ...Pick Your Part!, you just go and grab whatever parts you need of any car. They don't have any locations out in FL, but i found this place (LKQ Self Service Auto Parts | Used OEM Auto Parts Retailers and Junk Car Buyers) and it looks like they have a location near Orlando.

Hope this helps(if not now then in the future...)
We used to have more places like the PickYourPart, but they've all "changed over" to try and be something other than junkyards. The LKQ place you linked is a big chain establishment. They charge admission ($2) just to get in and look around, and while they do keep inventory of what cars they have, they do a shoddy job of it. I went to the Orlando location because they said they had a "1981 300D." Turns out it was a 1991 E320. Just a little off. It was that experience that had me spouting off in here (after calling all over the place before going there).

I'm with you on that one; I've still got good local sources for Ford parts, and I don't have any GMs kicking around anymore, so I don't have to worry about those. If I stick to here for Merc parts, then maybe I'll be able to stay sane and happy. :D
