It's a common conversion in the Far East. A member over on 190Revolution.net returned from Thailand with pics of Nissan and Toyota turbo engines and rear ends fitted in the W201. The conversion is popular since those engines are pretty much bulletproof and cheap compared to maintaining a Mercedes engine. Coupled with cheap labor, it's a one week job over there. One interesting find was that Toyota ABS were plug compatible with the Mercedes brake connectors, which we figured is possible since Bosch and Nippon Denso share tech.

The Nissan RB25DET and the SR20DET are popular japanese engine swaps for the W201.

Heres an example of the RB25DET.
