The job: Replacement of fuel pump and fuel filter.
The bill: $800.-

The shop refused to give me a bill separated in parts and labor. On my insisting they said verbally 4 hours of labor and did not show my old parts.

How badly was I ripped off?

You may want to consider removing the cover to see if they even replaced both parts.

Sorry to say, "yes" you have been ripped off. Everything OEM including an hour work should not have been over $350. This is a simple DIY that anyone capable of using basic tools should be able to do it at home. We have seen on and on that shops take advantage of people and you are not the only one. That's why we are here and helping each other to avoid things like this.

The fuel filter isn't the cost issue - the fuel pump replacement billed at MB list price $400+, or let's say a 15% discount $370... then added up the book hours 2 1/2 - 3 hrs for the pump pump (which is a little b#tchy by the way).

It is what it is... best to move forward, I would double check the pump was not the cheap no-good China.

Most shops don't show "wet" old parts anymore.

Keep the beat !

check local laws...which will determine whether the business even has to show
the old parts. generally speaking, this is done only when the car owner requests
this before the job is completed.

similar arrangement holds true for the cost. one generally asks for approx cost
of the job. you don't agree 'in the blind' for a job w/o asking for an estimate.
if it exceeds a pre-agreed-to dollar amount, the shop contacts you for approval
to move forward.

you need someone knowledgeable with your local laws to advise you how to
proceed, and whether you have any legal foundation for further action

engine cranked but did not turn over. I had my car towed to them, a local shop.

I don't think that I can legally go against them since I had approved the job.
In hindsight I knew that they ripped me off but then too late, lesson learnt.

Thanks for all inputs!

Here is the shop to stay away from

I thought the pumps were a bit of a pain on these cars -- The dealers normally charge $100+ to do only the filter.

For $ 800.00 you should have received the OE part - the OE pumps are expensive.

They said parts were about $300.- and 4 hours labor plus gas to get the parts from dealership. All those info were given verbally in the course of my dispute.
Actually they rounded down after half an hour dispute from $841.xx to $800.-

As said I deserved to be ripped off by approving the job without knowing the extent of the job. Lesson learnt!

Please give the shop some credit for finding the cause of the problem (diagnostics). That's the hard part in many cases. DIY diagnostics, guessing can even lead to replacement the wrong part(s), unncessary fix.
So the bill should be broken into $200 for diagnostics, $600 for the fix.
Sometimes, the shop misdiagnosed, jacked up the bill, and the customer footed the whole bill without knowing.

I think the law on West Coast allows max charge of $80 for inspection before shop has obligation to get signed estimate for the job.
Still Tex authorized and paid the job , so this is all water under the bridge.

There are (2) issues of note:

1) It's important to know the brand of both the pump and the fuel filter - so that you can confirm you didn't get ripped off worse: shop cost for China/India fuel pump like $75 and China fuel filter $5-$6.
If you don't know the brand of the parts - I have known indie's who pick up 60% or more profit on parts by using cheap shit parts

2) For others - lease understand that several electronic systems in the car will shut off the fuel pump/pressure - including the security system. No fuel pressure at the rail does NOT necessary mean bad fuel pump.

The only Pierburg W210 I have done was to replace a 2nd fuel pump for a firend after he botched putting in a China'kind-of-brand-name pump, that he didn't need in the 1st place since it turned out after all that to be CPS

Keep the beat !

If you came into my shop with that attitude, I'd throw you out. Why would I put up with you when I have people waiting in line that would pay without a fuss?

Some shop got the habit of rounding up the number. I've seen a shop mechanic/owner adding probably a quart of coolant to an old woman's Cadillac and charged her an even $10. At that time, a gallon of coolant was $3. In a way, the cost of the coolant was 75 cents, $9.25 as was added for the hard work to open/close the hood and fill the coolant tank.

Well TTony, a quality indie shop prides themselves on their relationship with their customers and as part of that a quality indie shop is very clear and specific on EXACTLY what parts they are using for any mechanical work - and not only is it spelled out up front with their customers, but the brand/part # is also very clear on their final invoice.

Indie shops that aren't clear on brand/type parts and aren't clear with that on their invoice detail - well those shops just aren't quality MB indies...plain and simple.

Yes - I have seen some not-quality-indie shops either intentionally or unintentionally replace W210 Pierburg fuel pumps with non-Pierburg - in non-OE you can get a drop in non-OE pump China/India as low as $60 - and the Pierburg or genuine-Bosch/Hella jobber cost is like $210 - and a whole mixed bag of quasi-brand or fake brand pumps in between.

There is literally $150 swing depending on brand/quality of the fuel pump .... if I ask about what parts you are going to use if you haven't borught that out up front - and you're going to kick me out because I ask - really doesn't matter since I wouldn't want to use a quasi-indie that keep's their customers in the dark, not to work on my MB's...

i always ask names of the parts being used on my car. fluids, etc. if any indy
tossed me out for asking similar, i'd consider that a win for me, not a loss, as it
underscores their ego and commitment to a quick buck. true professionals and
those who really care about cars would have no reason to feign indignation at
having to answer such questions.

Frankly, you'll get that parts that I am comfortable installing. Beyond that, there's the door.

I own everything free and clear and have made a good living over the years doing it my way. If you know how to run the business so well, open a shop, compete with me, and show us all how its done.

Why so much of attitude towards customers, "Unless" mechanic have something to hide. Money does not grow on trees as seems like it those it for some. More attitude problem a mechanic has, in my experience, less competent they are. I do it myself and do not need to put up with attitude. God bless power of education and knowledge ....
