Ok so i tried to figure out vacuum systems, todays lesson vacuum locks...
if i look at the picture of a trunk lock, i can see clearly the broken diaphragms, on both sides, but how do i replace the diaphragms? i have to remove the vac lock from the inner trunk lock and then i have to dismantle the whole vac lock to replace the Diaphragms, then put the vac lock together and then install the vac lock and connect the slider to the trunk lock!? wow and then i will have to pray my lock works? is there an easier way?
and on the 3 picture there is a plug under the softtop storage, what is it for? window heating?
Thanks Judy

I don't know about the vac diaphragms but that plug is the fuel tank fuel level sensor.

Thanks Rowdie, but what do i do if it is discontinued? plug the vac lines so the rest of the vac system is not affected and the trunk lock operates manual only?
hey i just found one for the trunk at VDO Vacuum Element Direct OE replacement , very expensive, i was hoping to be able to replace just the diaphragms....:(

Thanks Judy, I actually finished it last Saturdaynight and yes, I'm definitely gonna keep it nice otherwise my 10 months of work will be wasted time....
BTW my album still contains the pictures from before the restoration, you should check the topic Project Flyboy, that's what ik looks like now

PS: if I need any parts I always look at the bay, just search for:

You are talking $23.00 more for new as opposed to used. That $73.00 price is pretty darn good. Otherwise I woul just eliminate it, connect the lines together and hope your key keeps working. Clean the latch and lube everything.

So I've got a dumb newbie question:eek:.....I have discovered the vacuum release for trunk and gas filler door on my SL...but where do you actuate these from? I haven't found any buttons in the passenger compartment for these functions. What am I missing? I think the door locks are vacuum too, but no button.

There are no buttons. The door lock does the job. Lock the door with the key and gas filler door, trunk and doors lock activate.

hmmm..so when doors are locked, the gas filler door and trunk lid are too. Is this vacuum circuit separate from the circuit which affects timing and other engine performance? I'm thinking ahead here since I'll be running mine for the first time within the next month and I expect to have vac problems.

Thanks for the quick response, too!

Yes, it is tied in with the whole system and so are the climate control vacuum lines. This whole section can be isolated by plugging the vacuum line that comes up from the lower rear passenger side of the intake manifold with a golf tee.

Once you get all of the engine vacuum all straightened out you can then reconnect your climate control and locks to see what happens on that end.

The engine is the source for all the vacuum in your car, so in that sense they're all connected. A leak in any of the systems can affect engine performance. But the vacuum feeds come off many places on the intake manifold, and they branch out into separate circuits after the engine.

So, I guess, it's a little of Column A, and a little of Column B. Having separate ports and circuits lets you troubleshoot easier.

Thanks, Scott and lfedie for the info. I suspect I'll be using up my golf tees even though I haven't made it out on the links this year.:( These tid-bits will probably save me a lot of chin scratchin'.

18 months ago you'd never think those words would be posted on here. Mind you, that was a different Flyboy.
If you wish to be shocked, you should read some of his posts from 4-5 years ago. I did recently and ...he appeared pleasant, helpful and friendly.
