I just got a Benz w124 2.8. Its VIN is WDBEA28E9PC000004. The seller told me it was the fourth car of the series off the production line. I was wondering if this may be true.
Just to be sure, I checked the Russian site and it says the date of production is unknown. Could anyone tell me if indeed this is the fourth car off the production line in this series.
Thanks.

There is a plate on the door jamb that will tell you the month and year of production.

Thanks a lot guys. I will check the plate on the door tonight. Tomorrow I will transfer the title to my name. Thanks a lot for the link.
My other 2.8 had what I thought was a B2 problem. My mechanic was clueless so I thought it would be easier for everyone to just let it go and I got this one with the VIN referenced in this thread. Makes that the best $800 I spent in a long while!

Yes, the car you just bought appears to be the 4th car off the line *at the assembly plant designated as C* The W124 was offered in Europe for the 1985 model year and I'll take a WAG and say that production was at only 1 plant. If you look at the last 6 digits of the VIN for 1986, 1987, and 1988 sedans you'll see the number creeping up, up, up. My November 87 production sedan is 646969 so there were well over half a million sedans built at that plant by that time.
Wagons, introduced for the 1987 model year, were built at a different plant and the s/n were still pretty low for the 1988 model year. Both of my wagons are in the 070000 area.
It looks to me like MBZ opened a brand new assembly plant for the 1993 model year so the sequence started at 000001 again. The plant must have been getting engines and transmissions from another source, though, because if you use the Russian VIN site to look at the engine and transmission numbers for the parts installed in your car you'll see that they are both a lot higher than 000004.
