I don't think so...

An '81 US model would be a 380SL. Also the 560SL had black door handles.

Only definitive way to tell is to check the vin.

No. Door handles are not 560. More pictures would be helpful.

Very little to go on, but if it is an '81, it is NOT a 560SL. From the photo, it appears the steering wheel is not SRS (airbag) which all 560SL's should have. The door handles are chrome, and not recessed, again- not 560SL.

The big tipoff for a "re-badged" car is the shape of a door handle. There is virtually no way to interchange the doors.

Other subtleties that would be very difficult (i.e., not worth it) to change out, to identify a 450 vs a 380, would be the height of the boot lid (lower on pre-380's) and the chrome caps for the seat belts (also lower pre-380).

So what?, for $1,500 if it runs nd drives well who cares what it is. From the 1 pic it looks like a decent car.

You can get it for $1,500.00. Watch out. Something is not right. Even a 380 that needs the timing chain should go for more. It will part out for more than that.

The outside temp in center of dash is 1984 or later (or added to an older car by owner)
The headrests are later model 107 design
The CHMSL is 1988 or later design
Rims are 1986 or newer design

Oh... and the sun visors are missing...

Probably a 380

This car has a story... As others have said, be careful.
Post VIN Number for us, and we'll let you know more.

The trunk brake light not the same as my 560, mine is in the back of the trunk lid.
Back and front are confusing in this context... The pic the OP attached, has the CHMSL on the trailing edge of the boot lid. In relationship to the car, it is on the back edge of the boot lid (back of the car), right above the lifting handle.

The earlier 560's had the CHMSL on the leading edge of the boot lid (toward front of car), nearest the convertible cover and boot hinges. The change was around 1987-1988.

I presume yours is mounted nearest the boot lid hinges? Probably a Taller unit as well (more pronounced).

They moved the Wart on the '86-'87 to the rear in '88 and changed the design.

'86 and '87 = Hideous Wart

'88 and '89 = Unsightly Blemish

Both are significant flaws in the 560SL. Thanks, NHTSA.

I don't know if it is germane or not to the OP, but we covered the CHMSL very well, I think! :)

Nothing else on the 560 stirs my ire as does the center brake light. I find it hard to believe anyone offered a kit to retrofit 380's etc., let alone any actually being installed!

And we are way past the 10th post of the thread!

And the OP seems to have gone away. No more pics of the offending vehicle.

First you need to determine if the lady selling it (who owns the sign) is also the person that owns the car.
