I went and looked at 85 500sel today that had some AMG bits attached to it. Sadly the car was rather trashed on the inside and there was a lot of rust on the undercarriage.

The enginge though seemed to be pretty powerful - much more than my 420sel which made me wonder if the engine was just a stock 500 engine with minimal anti-pollution gear attached to or had AMG breathed some of their magic on it? Can you guys tell me?

the only visuals typically found on the Gen I's are AMG decals on the front top valve covers with valve adj spec. or pop the oil cap and check for solids. look for tubular headers. or peek under the car and try and spy a Mr AMG Foamy in a hamster wheel attached to the driveline.

No Mr Amg Foamy in a Hamster cage but I think it does have a set of tri-y's on it. How much are they worth?

I'm tempted to buy this car and move over various bits and pieces over to my car.

About a grand, give or take.

It also has Euro lights. Those are worth bucks too.

If the engine is anything like mine, your gonna love it. =)

I recently test drove a 420SEL just for the heck of it and I was really disappointed with the acceleration, power and feel of it.

If it is a gen1 car with tri-y's odds are AMG modified the engine to some extent. I have yet to come across/hear about AMG only adding tubular headers. It is possible though, still worth looking into.
