Check out this car and tell me if it's worth $350? It smokes terribly and smoke comes out if you take the oil cap off the engine too...Why is this? What can I do to fix it cheap? Is it worth it? It has 315k on it. I drove it and it rides smoother than my 300d... http://eugene.craigslist.org/car/53362003.html [B)]

there's nothing more expensive than a cheap benz. that said, at $350 or whatever you could get it for then if it runs and drives then that's a good deal. the parts alone are worth way more than that. on the other hand what would you think if you drove it 100 miles up the highway and the smoke went away after you did an italian tuneup?

An Italian tune-up is where you drive the car at full load, wide-open throttle for several minutes at a time. Find a hill or mountain, put your right foot in it and don't let up till the thing acts like it runs better.
I'd buy the car if you're nearby, and spend a couple weekends leisurely parting it out. Ebay yourself into profit. You can make some money on that thing if you dismantle it carefully. A word on the running condition of the car- it's called blowby and it's got lots of it apparently. Means bad valve seals most likely. Engine's worn out for all practical purposes. It will still run good at operating temp however, that's the great thing about these engines. Buy it and part it out to make some $$$ on Ebay.

I agree about parting it out. The fuel injection pump, turbocharger, and instrument cluster should fetch you close to $350 on Ebay. Just think about all the other parts you are profiting from after those three!

Ditto on the blowby. That means the engine has a lot of wear, probably in the cylinder walls too. Another option is to buy it, spend a few dollars to get it road worthy, and use it as a daily driver. Then you will find out if it is worth an engine rebuild, or parting out. If it's not worth the rebuild, drive it till it quits and part it out. It may still have a lot of miles left in it even with the blowby, though it may use some oil.

Is the smoke black, gray, or blue? Blue would definitely indicate oil burning, which means the engine is really shot. Black or gray could be simply a fuel or air issue.

I don't remember seeing blue smoke...I think it was more grayish black...But it smoked like a chimney on a cold night. Do any of those additives make it stop smoking? I'd like to buy it and resell it for double? People pay $$ for diesels around here because they want them for bio-diesel... [;)]

Additives are not going to fix the warn out engine on this car, but with that color smoke it is possible to have a clogged air filter or a leaking injector.
Even still the sell price is about what its worth as a car
The other members suggestions of parting it out could earn you some bucks, especially if the transmission is still good.
