Any service history on the S420? Don't ever buy one of these based on how clean it looks cosmetically. I made that mistake a few years ago on my last 97' S420. There's so many more things that can go wrong with the S420 but it IS the better automobile in every aspect compared to the C class and that's coming from someone who has owned both of these cars. No offense to C class owners but the W203 feels like a junk car compared to a well maintained W140. Then again it's like comparing apples and oranges...
You're going to get a biased response from people in this section but I will tell you this. A few years ago I traded my 97' Smoke silver S420 with about 129k miles for a 2003 C230K 1.8 coupe with 43k miles at the dealership. I had to pay an additional $10k on top. The only reason I traded was because my S420 had too many problems... However I'd rather have a fully functioning C230 than to have a lemon S420..
Needless to say I only had the C230 for about a month before I traded it in. It just wasn't a fun car to drive after a couple weeks... It wasn't even good looking actually... The S420 is the opposite, you just want to keep driving the car all day long.
If you're serious about the S420 you should take it to a good shop that knows the ins and outs of these cars and get a Pre purchase inspection before you trade. If you feel comfortable checking the car out yourself then by all means do so. It could save you a headache and plenty of $$$ down the line...
Search for the W140 buyer's guide at least before trading. Get as much info as you can.
