I'm looking for a new car and an acquaintance has a car for sale, the vin is WDB and it definitely has euro bumpers on it and the turn signals is in german. he says it's an '83 sl500, has an aftermarket radio, but i would do that anyways. thing is mint here are pics. it's idling at 900 which seems high and it's the only MB i've seen that doesn't have oil pressure marked at 3, it's at 2 but that doesn't seem like a problem..

Just being picky but it would be a 500SL, not an SL500.

Looks nice.
I think the VIN would help here.

Also, I dunno, but a high idle with low oil pressure indication?

That is a euro vin # . It can idle @ 900 when the car is in Park. But, it should idle at 750 when its in Drive and at a stop. Also, the oil pressure will sometimes be @ 2 when stopped. But,it should move up to 3 when you accellerate.

interesting so it does appear legit? it says '85 380sl on 2 different websites but the description says '83 500sl which is weird... im assuming the truth will lie on the title

so idling at 900 is high?
Well, on the high side for an automatic in park.

At that idle speed, I would think (from personal experience) that the oil pressure would hit 3.

But hey, how accurate are these gauges, anyways?

title description is somewhat irrelevant. VIN is what will definitively identify the car (and should be reflected correctly on the title).

107046 sez it is a 500SL... From where did you obtain the vin?

The 500SL was made from 1980-1989. They are all standard spec (euro). They were not sold in the USA. Various modifications were done upon import to the US to meet Federal Standards. Some received none. Some received all, headlights, bumpers, Cats etc. If there is no import sticker on the drivers door jamb then it probably had none.

The best place to obtain the VIN is the stamped number on top of the radiator upper core support. If this number is missing it is a red flag for prior front end damage.
