got a 300d 1984 the other day. guy said he left his house and stopped at a sign. started to pull forward and car would not go. he backed up to his house and sold the car to me as is. i have checked fluid and all looks good. once you get the car rolling it will go for a while. as long as you don't stop. reverse is fine. i read somewhere that a bad B2 piston can cause this. any ideas before i look for a trans.???

Hopefully the B2, and that isn't too serious from what I've read. But when the B2 goes, as you step on the pedal, it should start, then slip out of gear, then you can let it go back into gear, and slip out, and go back, etc, but you should be able to get it going.

It is not recommended to drive with it like that, but do you know if it will go in/out of gear like a good broken B2 will do?

In either case, whether you know more details or not, I agree that the B2 would be the first (cheapest) thing to try.

i will try that tomm. from the little i played with it on monday. it would not even take first gear. IE when put in D, i felt no jerk. and when i pressed pedal it done nothing. i DO know that from a rolling start it would continue to move. if ever stopped it would not go any further.
