Have seen indications that it is to the effect of "inspect the motor", but how is this done?

Have removed every screw on the thing and the cover will not come off. Anyone know the secret to opening this thing up?

Got it...

Requires a bit of force, feels almost like you're going to break the cover, and twist counter-clockwise. Cover will "pop" over internal mechanism and then you can unscrew it.

Moot point ... motor is fried. Looking for aftermarket solution now...

Suggestions?

That is an aftermarket antenna.

I recently installed a Metra 44-PW530. Ran the drain as close to the drain hole in the quarter panel as I could. Attached to pins 2 and 5 of the wire harness, which bypasses the center console switch, (less switches to worry about.) Radio on and antenna goes up, off and antenna goes down. (I wish I remember which pin was the one that goes to the switch...)
