I have a 2010 E550 with AMG rims. I am having unbelievable problems.

My rims get bent after any small road bump resulting in vibration when driving at speeds greater than 60 mph. Every 4 - 6 weeks I need to have my AMG rims straightened up. I have had about 6 rims and 8 tires replaced. (Luckily I have tyre and rim insurance and they pay for everything.) This is due to a fundamental design problem with the combination of the weight of the car, the airmatic suspension and the AMG rims resulting in bent rims after any small road bump. This is driving me up the wall!!

I now drive the car like it's a baby. Really carefully and really slow. Still having same problems with the rims. Today my car is at MB service AGAIN, getting 1 new tire and 2 rims straightened.

The only thing Mercedes wants to do for me is end my lease early so I can get another Mercedes. After so much trouble, why would I ever want to get another Mercedes? Ever?

PLEASE HELP. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

PS Prior to my E550 I owned a BMW M5 with racing M5 alloy rims - I NEVER had any bent rims. EVER. Same roads. Same driver, Used to drive a lot more aggressively.

Sounds like the rims are pretty bad. I think the car is one of the best built by MB in a long time. Sounds like you hit a lot of potholes. Try to avoid them once and a while.

I drive the car like a baby and to try to avoid all the potholes, but sometimes it is unavoidable. I can't drive at 25 mph staring at the road surface all the time!!

This problem never happened with my previous cars (BMW M5, Audi A8) and very rarely happens to me wife who dives a BMW X5. She previously drove a BMW 528 wagon and Mercedes E350 wagon and rarely had any problems with tires / rims.

As I said same roads, same drivers the only difference is the car. STAY AWAY from the E550 with the AMG wheels!!! AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!!

Working at a high volume dealer I see allllll kinds of bent wheels, road rash wheels, and bubbled tires. I however do not see a bunch of the same model. Which AMG wheels do you have? I myself have AMG wheels off a C55. My wheels are a bit bent up also. But like you said you can't avoid all potholes. The first set of AMG wheels I had off a SLK32 also had some bends and one front had 2 welds in it to fix cracks...railroad tracks. I don't think its a particular car problem. Wheels are aluminum and some are more prone to bending than others based on the design. The E550 is an awesome machine and can't be disgraced solely on the fact of the wheels being bent from crappy roads.

Atleast you got the wheel warranty

To answer your question the R class is the most unreliable MB vehicle followed by ML, GL all Alabama built... My 2012 E is amazing not even a single an issue so far. I have driven it in the NYC potholes and never a problem. Perhaps they improved the materials since 2010. This is another reason why one should never buy 1st or even 2nd year model. Let them get the bugs out first...

I think you should buy a truck and not try to drive performance cars. I have driven my E for 26k miles with no tire/wheel problems. But I avoid road hazards and potholes. If you can't do that then you should not try to drive a car with performance tires & wheels.

I had the same problem with my GL450. No problem with 2010 E350, just other problems. IMO the new Mercedes are so much better than previous years, it proably the best since 1995. Remember, you're not buying a Toyota, a product that is reliable and great resale, you're buying a Mercedes.

Love my 09 E550... AMG rims with 245/40 R18 fronts with 265/35 R18 on the rears... never had any bent rims.... bent rims is the reason i won't put 20's on my car... the tires are too low profile for pot holes that you can't avoid........... what tires are you running on?

I'd check out the tirerack.com web site and try after market wheels and tires. Give them a call as ask about matching wheels & tires to your car. They are very knowledgeable and helpful.

You can't just straighten up aluminum rims and not expect to loose structural integrity. The more you tweak them, the softer they become.

Since it's a lease, get out early and get a real AMG or another M5 .. :)

If it were your car, I would say get new rims and tires. .Try not to bang them up again.

fundamental design problem?? LOL that was putting amg rims on a run of the mill merc...

I had a 2010 E550 sedan for over a year. It is a fantastic car when everything works. In my one year of ownership I had far too many issues which led me to get rid of it. I don't have the time to keep taking it to the dealer and tell them the issues over and over again. Their standard reply is "We could not duplicate the issue" !! Major issues I had :

1) Bent AMG Rims - I was told $1100 per rim for replacement or live with the vibration / wobbling etc. This is a design defect and MB should own this up.
2) Tires wear too fast and start cupping in 5k miles. Makes the ride very noisy and full of vibrations.
3) Brakes always squeak loudly. Doesn't matter if the wheel is clean or not, its a cold or a hot day etc. Even after putting new set of rotors and pads the squeaking came back in 2 weeks. I had the same issue with my ML500 for 8 yrs.
4) New rubber wipers are way to loud when in operation. Same here - even after replacing with a new set - noise came back in 2 weeks.
5) Very musty / pungent smell comes from AC in summer. They did some contra-sept treatment of the AC condenser but the smell did not go 100%. Its very nauseating smell.
6) Over 45 mph I was getting a very prominent difference in ear pressure - like a buffeting sound all the time. Even my passengers would complain !! All windows , moonroof etc are closed but still this wierd feeling was always there.
7) TPMS would keep going off at random.
8) Trunk stopped opening all the way as the springs broke in 1 yr of ownership !!
9) The trunk spoiler came off .
10) Grinding / rubbing noise when making sharp turns at slow speeds like when getting in and out of tight parking spots.
11) Cooled seats do not operate.
12) Jerky transmission especially when in reverse.

All repairs / replacements were done at MB dealership. I got so fed up of all these issues that I got rid of it. Good riddance to bad rubbish !!

Good luck with your issues.

Wow - Quite a list of problems. I have not had a single one. My biggest complaint, if any, is the delay I occasionally experience putting it in reverse. But I live in a large metropolitan city and mili seconds seem like seconds or minutes in these conditions. I'm not sure any of these new electronic automatic transmissions shift from drive to reverse and quicker. I would not call it a problem with the vehicle.

I have blown one tire on the city streets. But if you saw the conditions of the roads we drive on here, you'd understand. A 2-4" exposed vertical steel manhole with no ramp up can do a lot of damage at 25+ mph.

The car is great. I struggle with the title of this thread asking, "Is the E550 the worst care Mercedes ever built?" Seriously? I'm not sure it's the best, but it's pretty darn good and I'm not sure beyond the AMGs that I'd like better. I do have a fondness for my old diesel ML350, but it's a completely different type of vehicle.

bent wheels are not a OEM problem, they are a road and at times, a driver problem. every one of those "unavoidable" pot holes are the ones that bent the wheels. the e550 tires is pretty low profile and it wont take much to bend the wheel. switch to some 17's with a taller tire if you cant avoid crappy roads.

Makes so much sense about loosing structural integrity
I could see it may be straightening once, after that I would just buy new wheel,

Sir,

I had the same issue on my e350 which i documented here:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w212-e-class/1507955-2-flats-dented-rim-one-time.html

and i returned the car last year - here's my update on that -- http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w212-e-class/1691813-update-2-flats-dented-rim-one.html

i agree with you that this should not be happening but people on this site say that "i dont know how to drive my car" .... there are so many people having this issue so i guess this means that no one knows how to drives their cars, huh?

the pothole i hit was so small and other cars (a nissan maxima, a jeep) went over it without a problem...... such a frustrating issue and wheni went to mercedes, they said "this happens all the time, we change over 500 tires a month. this will happen again so we'll see you then." - unbelivable.

i too had almost all of the problems you listed on your 2010 e550. mine was a 2010 e350.

Plus one. A good set of aftermarket rims would be my second thought (after going through one round of repair).
