I have a 1991 420SEL 133000 miles, One month before when shift to (R) the transmission delay about 20 sec to engaged. I had the trans fluid & filter change, Now...When the engine cools down the problem does not happen, after 30 mins of driving REVERSE does not work(just no reverse)drive is still ok, after turn off the engine cools down about 2hrs the the reverse comes back but it still engage slowly.

Does someone know which part has problem.

Hi David,

Your problem looks more like the transmission is not doing very well. Does your transmission shift smoothly or does it give a 'kick?' when it shifts from the lower gear to the highter gear? I had a somewhat similar problem. I changed the fluid, filter and pan twice. But no results. Finally I had to put in a rebuilt transmission for $2800.

Thanks, That happen sometime smoothly shifts from lower gear to highter gear, But sometime have to a give "kick" when shifting from lower gear to highter.

It look like I need to do the rebuilt

okay, this is silly. it's nice to ask for opinions here, but before you go out to look for a "transmission rebuilder," how about taking your car to a knowledgeable mechanic and letting them tell you what your car needs? when i lived in NY, i took my car to P+D automotive in queens. the guy's name is phil -- he isn't a mercedes specialist, but one of his guys used to work for a benz shop. plus phil is very conscientious and honest, two qualities you hope and pray for in a mechanic...
