I use a 5W/30 synthetic GT-1 blend oil. Change it every 3,000 miles with the filter. Call me crazy but with 174K miles on the engine now it makes me feel better......and thats all that matters. I guess its like blood to my mind. If its got dirt in it it might be bad for the engine.....................
When I changed the oil guide tubes last year I was amazed at how clean the engine was on the inside. At that time it had about 165K miles on the engine. I'll just keep my 3,000 mile oil change schedule.
PS: I NEVER ADD A DROP OF OIL BETWEEN CHANGES. It never uses any. Whatever amount goes in the filler cap at the oil change comes out the oil pan drain 3,000 miles later. Try saying that about any 1997 American made V-8 engine with 174,000 miles...............

Hey, Jeff.
Okay, you're crazy (hey, you said to call you crazy...).
Seriously, I appreciate the OCD aspects, but you're throwing away oil that is better than what is poured new into lots of cars on the road. Pay $25 and have it analyzed, and run it until you're into the 80% range. You won't hurt your car one bit and you'll be doing the environment a favor as well as your pocketbook.
FWIW, it's no wonder it doesn't use any oil, you change it before it has a chance to.

(Yeah, I'm joking.)
Not an American V8, but my last car was an American V6, a 1994 Grand Am. I bought it used with 35,000 miles. Started it on Mobil1 immediately and changed it every 5,000 miles for a while, did an analysis and extended it to 10,000 miles with a new filter (and top-off) every 5,000 miles. At 150,000 miles it still did not use oil and peering in under the oil cap it was still clean atop the valve train, usually got around 30 mpg on the highway. Yeah, I attribute all of that to Mobil1. Engine was still running strong when I gave it to a struggling family who were happy to fix up the other little niggling things (leaky PS hose, noisy CV joint, I think that's it).
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
