My son is getting licensed soon and I'm thinking about resurrecting my 2000 ML320 that has been sitting for over a year. Everything seems to run well except for the shifter gets stuck in drive or neutral. I have to turn off the vehicle to shift to reverse or park. After she drives 10 miles or so, the problem mostly goes away...but then comes back after she cools down. I don't think anything has ever been spilled in the shifter...but you never know. I just completed a transmission service (new filter, fluid and electrical connector). I'm going to clean the EGR tube and if necessary replace the EGR valve. But, there are so many codes. What do you all think. We purchase the car new and she's been a good girl for 250,000 miles. Here are the codes from my Au7tel MaxiDiag Elite scanner:

ETC – Electronic Transmission Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. 130 Stored
CAN communication with control unit N15/5 (Electronic selector lever module control unit) is sporadically disturbed.
Fault Code #2 Code No. 135 Stored
CAN communication with the engine system is sporadically disturbed.

ESM – Electronic Selector Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. P1856 Stored
Selector lever position detection has failed.

ME2 – SFI Motor Electronics Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. P0400 Current (POSSIBLE FIX – CLEAN EGR TUBE AND BOTH EGR VALVES)
Exhaust gas recirculation: malfunction (function chain)
Fault Code #2 Code No. P1999 Stored & Current
Please refer to vehicle service manual!

ETS Electronic Traction Control Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. C1140 Stored
Unknown fault code
Fault Code #2 Code No. C1141 Stored
Unknown fault code
Fault Code #3 Code No. C1022 Stored
Unknown fault code

BAS – Brake Assist Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. C1202 Stored
A7/7s1 (BAS release switch) : Plausibility
Fault Code #2 Code No. C1207 Stored
S9/1 (Stop lamp switch) : Plausibility

AAM – All Activity Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. B1716 Stored
The ATA interior motion protection/inclination sensor in component N41 (Trip computer (TRIP) control module) is faulty.
Fault Code #2 Code No. B1040-005 Stored
Can Bus: Fault in communication: N10/1 (Extended activity module (EAM))

EAM – Extended Activity Module
Fault Code #1 Code No. B1040 Stored
Fault in CAN communication with control unit MR engine control.

If you and your son could bond over working on a vehicle, keep it. The father/son relationship is priceless; the ML, not so much.
I couldn't have said it better. Our bonding during the late night slow drive cycle adventures on the freeway a truly priceless. We replaced a EGR valve and all the rotting crankcase breather and vacuum hoses and she is running like a champ. We have hope.

So, I cleared the DTC codes and starting the drive cycle procedure in preparation of the California SMOG test. After 3 drive cycle reset runs and about 60 miles the HCAT monitor is still not ready. All other monitors are good. Any suggestions?

Here are the current DTC codes.

New fault code: P0150-130 G3/3 (Left O2 sensor, before TWC [KAT])

Stored fault code: C1140-8 Component N49 is not initialized.

Stored fault code: B1 040-005 CAN bus: fault in communication: N1 0/1 (extended activity module (EAM))

Stored fault code: B1 716 The ATA interior motion protection/inclination sensor in component N41 (Trip computer (TRIP) control

You are not going to complete catalyst monitor with fault for O2 sensor. Post screenshot of completed monitors. Heated catalyst should show N/A.

Hey Witek_M,

Thank you for your help. I've attached screenshots from my Autel MD802 and it does show Heated Catalyst "N/A" Is "N/A" indicating a fail or not applicable? I borrowed a Foxwell NT301 scanner as it has a one-button I/M Readiness scan feature...and it fails the HCAT.

I have a new O2 sensor that I was going to install a couple years ago, when I received a trouble code...but didn't complete the R&R when the code went away. Does P0150 $01 - O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 1 indicate a failed O2 sensor? If so, which one? Murphy's law tells me it the front left side...cause that's the hardest one to get to.

It is left front O2 sensor. Code is pending. Vehicle should pass smog. Here in Texas it would. Pending codes don's show up in smog test report.
As for heated catalyst N/A stands for not applicable.
