So I currently have a 1986 420SEL, a 1988 560SL, and a ML430, but I have always loved the looks of the old W123.

I have some family, who live about 8 hours away from me who have an old 300TD, not sure on the year. Its gray market, stick shift (I'm guessing 4 speed?) and last I recall, pretty dirty, and not sure on condition. The car has been with the family from the start, and I'd imagine has well over 200k miles. Its pretty old as well, how long ago have then been making the w123? Likely as old as possible.

Something came up and I have the chance to go down look at it, and possibly buy it. I'd imagine 500 to 1,000 dollars, but free is also a possibility.

Of course if I do get this I would likely sell one of my current mercs, I'm thinking the SEL, which its self is in decent condition, most likely better condition then the TD I'm looking at, but however I love the chassis, I like that its a stick unlike my other mercs, its a estate which I'd like to have, plus being diesel is cool as well.

Question is, would this be worth is? Yes I know this is the W123 forum, but you guys know the car better then I, or someone from another place. Thanks for your help. Assuming its mechanically in good condition would this be worth it, its is it something to avoid.

And I know what its like to keep an old merc running.

pick it up. Replacement parts for a w123 are relatively easy to find

The car in question is a 300TD station wagon with a 4 speed manual? That is quite rare! It won't cost any more than either your R107 or your W126. It is unique and worth saving.

The 123 started in 1979 ended in 1985. The OM617a turbo motor was available starting in 1982 (in the 123 series) Is this a turbo diesel? The non turbo motor is the OM617.

Anyway these 300d motors (well maintained) have reached million mile marks. I have had several with over 300,000. Great cars

This is probably a non-turbo model. to my knowledge, turbo diesel 123s were not offered with a manual transmision.

You should look at it if you get the chance. Check that it runs and works, try driving it before you make up your mind. the non-turbo engine only have 80 or 88 HP depending on what year it was made, and thats one of the reasons of why they are everlasting machines :) And check that it isn't to rusty :-D

Its the non-turbo model. Has manual windows as well, other then that, I don't know too much about this specific car. Its been sitting in their drive way for a long time though.

I know it worth the price, but would it be worth replacing my 420SEL it was I was asking. Then again, I really only need one car, so what the hell.

Thanks for the help though, I figure I'm going to go check it out, and if I don't get it, fly back, but I'd love the drive it home.

Sorry to digress....but I still haven't seen one that holds true to that statement without a rebuild...

Back on topic.....if you fly up there bring fuel hose, 2 clear filters, two spin on filters, and a bottle of cetane booster from the store (buy it locally). Where is it? 8 hours of driving or 8 hours of flying??

I'm in San Jose, its down in LA, so about 8 hour drive, but a friend is driving down, so I was going to hitch a ride, and find my own way back, or chill down there with family for a week.

So I should get a bit of stuff to "fix" it up a bit?

Oh, I may be jumping the gun on this, but I LOVE the coloured hub caps, how much do they go for?
