I have found a deal on a 08 E350 4m....but it has 100k. Is it a bad choice looking at one with this many miles? It is significantly discounted, which is the only reason I am even thinking about it.

Whats the consensus?

It could be better than one with 60k miles. See if you can get the service history.

Have it taken to a Benz dealer or specialist and they have a thorough PPI done. If you take it to a dealer they may not show the service VMI, but can at least tell you what was done by MB dealers as far as repairs and routine service.

Ok so I saw the car today...overall its pretty decent. Normal wear and tear on the exterior -- some parking lot dings, nothing with paint damage.

There was however some damage to the rear cargo nets on the seats. It looks as if the screws were pulled out and both seats were missing the cargo nets and the attachments. Is this an easy fix, or would it require replacing the entire seat backing? Any ideas?

Other than that, Carfax says its been at the dealer most its life, but not much info on what was performed. Just says:
"Engine Checked
Brakes Checked
Recommended maintenance performed"
at 30k it had cam magnets replaced, windshield replaced. Rest was above. every 10-15k.

Does that mean just oil changes etc or can it be more than that? Would a dealer let me know prior history at all, or is that top secret?

EDIT: I guess I am most interested about the trans fluid...with 101k if its not done already, it needs to be right away. Would the dealers release that info (before and/or after purchase)?

I just sold 2 of MB with 266k each and new owners appreciate them.
Mine were diesels, so it is a bit different story, but gasoline engines seem to last 400,000 miles as well.
No panic with transmission. I did service few of 5-speed with 150k or 180k and they work well.
Getting records from the dealer takes some negotiation. They have excuse to protect privacy of PO so you need to have some edge with them to talk them into giving the copy with name of PO blanked out.

Gotcha. Any last tips before I test drive it later today of things to visually check?

I am reading the 4matic is pretty robust and reliable. Would doing a few u turns help guess no major issues with the system?

Do the later 722.6 still have that pilot bushing issue that sucks trans fluid into the electronics?

The only thing that adds maintenance on 4M is front CV joints.
Boots last average 10 years, but can be torn by road debris, so need to be checked often.
All 722.6 transmissions do have pilot bushings, but they cost about $10 and even if you loose 1/2 l of ATF on the job, what is big deal?
The issue was blown out of proportion, just like SBC brakes IMHO

Ok so when I do my trans change I should probably replace the bushing or orings then. Just want to get an idea on what I will need to do on this model if the deal works. I'll check the boots as well.

MB made a policy years ago that pilot bushing on those transmissions should be replaced at each service.
And again, why we are beating around $10 part?
I think you are getting paranoid about potential purchase.
I bought our higher mileage E320 4M almost 2 years ago and so far replaced seat covers ;)
Sure I was lucky enough to get new battery, relatively new SBC and suspension bags, so that would be the first things go check.
The 2008 model might have other issues, but don't we have stickies for it?

I have an 08 e350 4matic with 76K on it. We have had it sense 40K and have had no issues other than a sunroof seal(adjustment), microswitch in sunvisor($2) and a marker light (due to a leak). Overall it is an amazing car. The previous owner did not do the transmission service and I plan on doing it here in the next few K.
The 2008 does not have SBC so that is one less thing to worry about but I would make sure all the lighting works as well as check to make sure there are no leaks and get as much service history that you can find on the car.

Talking about 2008 brake system, what are the predictions on it?
My understanding is that it did not come with baby teeth like SBC with loose plug, but that sounds like more sophisticated system that SBC and I wonder what is life expectancy and cost to replace?
What I am afraid about is that once MB found the way to program software to generate good income on parts supply, they will not let the milk cow go.

I'm not worried about the pilot bushing I just wanted to know if I needed to order the part with the fluid. I only encountered it with our old clk320 and wondered if it was just am issue with that version or year. I remember I had a problem fitting the new one in that car and just swapped the orings. Pretty much same procedure right?

And it looks like still no TC plug lol. I used shell 134 back then...is that still the most economical fluid today or is there anything else?

I bought an 08 E350 4matic with about 100k km on it; had it for about 15 months and, other than a thrown accessory belt which required towing, had no issues whatsoever. Runs great, gets decent mileage (as good as can be expected from a heavy 3.5L car with a sluggish 5 speed automatic...), and it looks (almost) like new. If you can, get some kind of warranty to cover unexpected things, but don't go for more than a year, unless you want to pay more for the warranty than for any repair. Find a trustworthy mechanic to go to when you need to, and enjoy the ride!

Shell 134 ATF from a shell distributor is probably still the cheapest out there.

Yeah, I remember the mentality from W124 section.
Cheap, cheap.
I am afraid with digital cars that can backfire very fast.
ATF is no longer just oil, but also insulator.

Is there an MB maintenance schedule that shows everything they do at an A B service for 2008? I only found one after googling for a 2004...unless it's the same?
