When I first bought my S in 2007, my wife and I both had iPhone 3g's. I had no problem pairing them to the Mercedes dealer installed "puck". A couple of years later I bought the iPhone 4. And I cannot cause it to pair. I have the iPhone in pairing mode, and search for devices in the S Command screen. It will eventually find the iPhone, and asked for a code. The iPhone never acknowledges that it has been found. My recollection is that the iPhone, when found, displays a code for pairing. Not happening. I've attempted to use the 5 digit code for the "puck' but no go.

Any ideas out there?

Try this...

1) with the COMAND controller go to phone > add phone > options > external authorization (this is the whole key... external authorization)

2) make sure bluetooth is on (on the phone) don't search for anything, just 'turn on bluetooth'.

3) press the bluetooth module button... so the blue light flashes rapidly.

4) "MB bluetooth" should appear on the phone, touch that. it will ask "do you want to pair mb blue tooth?" hit yes, then the car will say 'authorize joe's phone' (or whatever), click down on the comand controller.

enter the corresponding numbers for mbusa on the key pads of both devices when prompted, the car and the phone.

that should do it...

putting the car in 'external authorization' mode is the key.. iphones, for me, are the easiest to pair, but it must be done through external authorization.

Thanks, your comments led me in the right direction. In my 2008 S550 the Comand/Telephone selection does not include an option for "external authorization." But just pushing the button no the puck brings up a request for a passkey on the iPhone, assuming you are on the Bluetooth screen. I then entered the 5 digit passkey that came with the MB puck and instant pairing. Again, thanks.

The factory installed cradle on the 2007 S550, and presumably others as well, requires the Motorola V710 phone with MB internal electronics and Verizon as the service provider. A Motorola V710 phone is available from Verizon but without the MB internal electronics and will not work with the MB factory installed cradle. For all other phones and service providers, MB offers a blue tooth dongle (puck) available from MB dealers. As a general matter, the factory installed Motorola V710 phone in the factory installed cradle is reportedly more reliable and less susceptible to dropped calls and fade outs.
