While certainly not a newbie to MB or Benzworld, I am pondering purchasing a G-Class and would appreciate any and all feedback. I have been lurking this list for quite a while, and think I am ready to check in. And yes, I am a tad intimidated with the expertise the "core group" represents on this board (It's a whole lot different on the ML board where alot of the talk is about teenagers creating urban assault vehicles and comparing SUV's).

My work vehicle is an '02 ML320 and am considering purchasing a mid-90's cabriolet this fall, though no vehicle in particular. Don't need a V8, and would love a diesel. Here's what I have been thinking.

1. One of my business interests is a remodeling and audio/video retailer company, but don't do any "real" work. When I haul stuff around, I can use a small trailer for big items.
2. Live in Tidewater VA (US) area and the outer banks allows beach cruising.
3. I don't trail ride. We only get floods and a couple of snows a year.
4. Love open-air motoring, and this is the place for it, but my old SL only carries 2. Need space for 3 and a dog.
5. I need my vehicle to last a big long time, and I doubt my ML has what it takes (though it's a heck of a lot better than people give credit). No way I would buy a 164.
6. Mechanically, I can do about what a Jiffy-Lube can do. Past what a couple of skilled friends can do to help me, I am incompetent. I do know when I am getting screwed by a hack mechanic, however.
7. Not made of money, so I need basic reliability, and I am pretty sure there is no local expert on G-class.
9. As an "old school" Mercedes addict, I think electronic gizmos and plastics have really hurt the brand (though I understand completely why they have done it).

That's far too much about me and my needs/wants. What do you think?

Thank You very much for your insights.

Cabriolet G-Wagens

Both Keiser Motors and Europa both have newer Cabriolet G-Wagens in stock.
I truly doubt that you will find anything in diesel, expecially in a cabriolet. If there are any diesels to be had, Norm Keiser has been known to import them.

That G is still located in Europe. It's not in GA.

RE: Not in GA

yeah, If i didnt think it would be a huge pain to import i would buy that 290 in a heartbeat. Its either buy that one, or find an older diesel G and do those mods myself, which i wouldnt really mind doing since i think that kind of thing is fun but i just dont have anyplace to do that kind of work atm. one day i will have a truck just like it though... one day. (i also have a few too many toys atm and not enough places to keep them [}:)])

My mistake, the Dealer is located in Georgia.
And he ("EuroTruck" aka Sean) posts regularly to this forum. [;)]

Hi Ray,

Welcome to our humble little board[:)]

Probably time to narrow the search a little. If you are talking early 90's you have a couple choices to make, 300GE(G300) or G320. To the best of my knowledge there is not a single diesel cabriolet of that vintage in the US. Getting one here will likely cost more than it is worth. If you do want a diesel cab, you will have to go to the old style trucks and unless an engine swap has been done you are looking at a 5 cyl diesel with 88hp pushing a 5000 lb truck. It will be slow, very slow.

Since you admit limited mechanical knowledge I reccomend sticking with one of the factory options, the 300 or 320 gas engines. The 300GE(G300) was sold here from 1990-1994, the G320 took over in mid 1994 until 1999 roughly. The 300 is the M103 inline six, 3 liters single cam head mechanical fuel injection, one of my favorites. The G320 uses a twin cam 24 valve version known as the M104. It has much more in the way of electronic controls but offers 40 more hp as well at 210hp. I've owned both, prefer the simpler M103 in the 300.

Now finding one is the trick, they are extremely rare. Expect to travel to even get a look at one. Make sure it is exactly what you want as selling a rare vehicle like the G is not always an easy task. Once you do find the right one though, you are sure to be smitten for a lifetime. The great news is that with proper care it will last that long.

Good luck, and let the barrage of questions begin[:D]

Here is a 300GE on Ebay

You can check this one out - a buy it now price of just over $27K seems like a good deal on first glance anyway.

RE: Here is a 300GE on Ebay

That G has been bought on ebay 3 months ago for less than 20000,00. (I think it was 18500,00)

So paying the price he is asking now is cracy. If he changed the seat covers, nobody would notice that it is the same.

Or he wants to make quick money on that car or it is full with problems and still wants to make money with the car.

thanks for that info, I also have a friend that was interested in that Gwagen, now with your vital information, he is clearly having second thoughts.

Thank you,

Van
