Hello,

my car has an intermittant starting problem i need help with....you can go to the car put the key in...all dash lights come on and it starts

on other occassions when you do this...no dash lights nothing......it usually sorts itself out after removing the key and reinserting it a few times and it starts fine

am i correct in thinking a new ignition switch is the problem

any help greatly received

Hi cockyapple and welcome aboard.
Before starting to replace things, if your car has an electric adjustable steering column, try to mode it up and down and back and forth and see if something improves. If it doesn't, try to use the forum search feature and look for a guy that goes under the name of aam. He solved the problem if memory assists me and a few other members had a similar problem.
As for aam, he jokes a lot but he's an extremely knowledgeable and nice person and trust me he knows a lot.

Cheers.

Hello Steve,

Welcome aboard the R129 Forum!

Based on your description, it sure does sound like an ignition problem. At this point, I would like to recommend aam's suggestion that you try the moving the steering wheel in and out, up and down. It has solved problems similar to yours on a few occasions.

Good Luck!

Well what a coincidence Mick. :D

Albert's (in and out, up and down) concept has apparently gone mainstream.

You bet Ken :D. And aam's remedy looks like the only temporary fix that actually works.
As for cockyapple please don't be amazed by the friendly talking here: we are not a normal forum but a big and friendly international family :).

Good luck for your problem tho.

Cheers.

Hahaha.
Did you guys ring?
I have nothing more to say, you said it all.
OK, OK I lied, I always have something more to say.

Welcome a board to the new guy.
No that is not it.

If you can take the switch out and clean the points and nothing is broken.
You got it fixed.

If after you do all my tricks and nothing works replace the switch.
Read my post about the switch before you screw things up.
But do the up/down, in/out thingy first.
S*T, are we talking about sex here?
May be I should re wright Cama Sutra.

Regards.

It would be nice if members report back with an answer on the up/down,
so we now the percentages on the above.

The way how it works is that the contacts in the ign. switch get dirty,
and by doing this the arks clean them a bit so it works, for a while...........

See also my other post on ignition switch.
Sounds like I am advertising here. Hahaha.
OK,OK, I'll shut up. :(

Regards.
