I have change over my instrument cluster and was wondering if the KMs will go back to the original shown on my old cluster after a view drive cycles or will it stay on the new one shown. I change it over because on start up my dials were chattering for about 10 sec.
I thought mileage was stored in the ECU

It would be that easy to fake the mileages by just changing the instrument cluster.

That's what I thought but it hasn't change and IDE rather it did go back to original.

You need the MB Star system to change clusters and transfer the info like the KMs.

Bring your old cluster just in case. I can't remember if it has to read by the MB Star system before the replacement goes in and gets coded with the info for your ML.

What I would do is try and save as much money as possible.

Before going to the dealer re-install your old cluster and leave it just pushed in to the dash. Do not put all the screws and other parts back on.

In that way he can take the mileage readings from the old one, then unplug it and plug in the new one and transfer the data.

Just out of interest...........You changed your cluster for another 'used' cluster and the only difference is the km's are wrong?.............does everything else with the cluster work ok?

Just be good to know that the cluster is a straight swap for a used one i(apart from the km/miles recorder) if I ever have a cluster problem.

Everything else works perfect. I'm going to check my temp on the code reader and the speedo is about 5 k out compared to the GPS but it was on the other cluster as well, that's because off my wheels

Yes it did I was hoping it would show mine but it didn't so I've wiped 120k of it. I guess it won't matter until I sell but I think I would just pass the old girl to one off my kids anyway.

I think most of the info on the pdf supplied by 43 will have been cracked by now if you wanted to get the mileage corrected. It is common knowledge and not letting the cat out the bag.

I originally suspected that my cluster had previously been substituted for one with lower mileage but was told by the workshop that inspected it prior to purchase that this was not possible as the mileage was stored in three different locations and that the display would show the highest reading. Now that you have proved this wrong, I can see why I had so many issues with my low mileage purchase. Three years on, and with help from this forum (thanks 43sqd), my to do list is short, but my knowledge of this vehicle is now pretty good.
