Well my beloved '04 s600 has had another hiccup. This one has a happy ending and may be of help to others here.

Short story:

Instrument cluster went black. Replaced a fuse on passenger side fuse box (number 79, 5amp). Did not help much. I have sworn off going to the dealer to fix as I found a great mechanic. Unfortunately he was quite busy and I couldn't wait. Went to MB manhattan (they really are great people, but the prices... Ouch!) and apparently the instrument cluster is "on bulletin" and they replaced the whole thing for free.

Sooo, if your instrument cluster goes black and nothing works on it go to the dealer. They will fix for free.

Hope that helps someone out there!

Honestly I have no idea. I checked all the fuses and connections. Maybe there was a short. The ground near the engine was loose (driver's side). Not sure if that was it... How is the new s class? Was thinking about an s65 amg trade-in 2008-2009. Those things just fall off a cliff after a couple years (from 198k to around 80 or less).
