Hi everyone. I thought I would post my experiences here as when I researched this I could literally find zero information as most want to upsize..

I wanted to downsize from the stock 18" to 17" 225s for a comfortable square stance mainly for cruising and DD. I wanted to set the car up to be much more comfortable over bumps in town and during long distance cruising for road trips.

Even though my car features the performance package 6/4 brake setup the new 17" 7.5J ET35 wheels fitted perfectly. I would say there is a good 3-4mm clearance between front calipers and spokes. It is a little close but rules are strict here in Switzerland in terms of homologation.

If someone wants to do this to their C55 even if they have giant brakes like me I would recommend 17" 8J ET35 all round to give that little more clearance for the front calipers.

Otherwise running with PremiumConti 6 R17/45/225 tyres on BBS wheels the car feels far more comfortable and composed and makes a much better DD and GT car vs stock while still being fun enough for a blast around the countryside now and then.

How does it feel less sporty?

I have no issues in the handling department. Had new bilstein shocks installed over the summer and I am lucky enough to have an amg lsd on my c55 which means even from a standstill on the narrow tyres I can put down almost all the power with no traction loss.

In fact square stance plus the fact that the new wheels are quite a bit lighter than the factory ones helps the car feel a bit more nimble.

There is another reason to downsize. Tyre tech has really advanced since this car was manufactured. Tyred like the premiumcontact 6 combine comfort along with good handling characteristics that simply wasn't possible before. Even with these tyres the max speed is 300km/h so they will never be pushed beyond limits unless you go to track which is not my intention :)
