The infrared remote keys don't work from the time I bought my car from the earlier owner. Does anyone know what are potential fixes?

I changed the batteries and they don't seem to work. Even the infrared light on the key does not light up when the key is pressed. Assuming something could be wrong with the infrared light, I tried recoding the keys based on the instructions on pp119 of the owner's manual. That did not work either. I have two keys and neither worked. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend too much money to fix the problem. It would be cool to have them working again, but it's something I can live without if it costs too much.

No infrared emission?

Thanks guys! It still does not work:( The red light on the key does not light up, and the synchronization did not work (I followed the instructions in the manual). I tried it with both of my keys. It is possible that both keys may have been damaged and hence not transmitting IR rays, or that the receiver in the car has gone bad. Any further ideas?

It works now!

The problem was very simple. The previous owner had the batteries in wrong (in both keys). He had the car for five years so I assumed he knew. I changed the batteries and put them in the right way and both keys now work. It is amazing, how after ten years, the keys work so well and it operates the doors, as well and the windows and sun roof. I'm glad I did not have to buy new keys, just new batteries!
