Hey there,

First post :)

Working on a plan of importing a 1974 416 camper mog from Germany into Canada. I have been working on mogs for several years while living in Germany and have a general idea about the possible headaches of owning one. Actually my first ever car was a 404! Have to admit that was not the smartest purchase :p Anyhow, fast forward 25 years and I'm looking again.

Any specific 416 details I should have checked? Apparently it just past German safety road tests and those are very strict! Therefore I assume that the basics are in order. btw, it has the 90hp diesel engine.

Cheers.

I was told as a rule of thumb by the fellow that I got my 406 from, to take the price in Euros of your truck and multiply by 2 1/2 by the time you get it. So brace yourself for that. And I am closer to Germany than you are relatively speaking. Make sure you do your research on transport. That aside, I'd love to have a 416 with the same options as my 406,so good luck.

Shouldn't be an issue. I've brought 2 into the BC side of the world. I'd say the 2.5 times would be a little steep! Shipping is expensive but I don't think it was that expensive.

Few things, make sure it's clean. Spotless. If customs charges you to wash it, they charge significantly more than your average coin wash ;) Make sure it's insured. Lots can go wrong between Germany, and here. If I ever ship one again, it won't be on a flat rack, to much headache to get it off, and it's expensive to destuff, I'd go RoRo or in a container if I did it again.

Bring extra parts. If your getting it shipped here anyway, and it has a camper box or empty space on the back, bring as much as you can, might help offset your costs if you bring items over for others. If you want a winch, get one put on while it's in Germany, save some money that way, and you won't be hunting for strange, rare brackets here.

Those are some great points! Thank you.

I'm now trying to dig a bit deeper.... Looks like shipping a full camper will be way more expensive and complicated than a flat bed unimog. Full camper wont fit into container, single truck does! That means I would get the mog loaded into a box in the middle of Europe and delivered anywhere in Canada without too much hassle. The money I safe in just buying a chasis I could reinvest in building my own living quarters. I'm working in the trade and have extensive knowledge of that work through years within the expedition vehicle industry.

I'm not set on a 416... Would you prefer a 1300L? If so why? Too me it looks like there are more 1300/1700 in Canada than 416....

Thanks!
Andreas

Once you have made your choice a few important things to remember to make importation into Canada easy IMHO:
1. Proper Bill of sale (truck must be older the 15 years)
2. Clean Title documents or 'ownership' papers
3.Put it into a container if you can (safer)...watch Ro-Ro video someone posted a few weeks back..SCARY. If the box comes off it could go in same container (40'er?)

Again, thanks for the help!!!

I'm also looking at the North American market... Not much to be had in my price range... I was thinking of maybe investing around $25.000 all in but for that price I haven't seen anything nice... Have my eyes on 416 camper located in Germany but that would certainly not fit into a container...

In any case I'm looking in all directions right now and open for pointers and ideas :)

there is a U1300 camper conversion in California for $19800, also an aluminum ambulance box to build a camper from for $5000 in Vancouver, a 416 needs a little work for $14000 in California, also a 416 doka in vancouver for $16500 all on the Unimog Exchange. $25000 will limit the possibilities in the Unimog camper department sorry to say as I have also been there. Is there anything wrong with putting a NICE truck camper in the box of a mog. I know it won't flex but it shouldn't have to in the box.

Hi,

I have come to the conclusion that a Unimog is not in the books at this point. I remember (from my military time) that there was always something to get fixed on those...Air leaks where normal, two unimogs had issues with the clutch and one even sheared off a driveshaft! It's like a Landrover just more expensive.
Thank you for all your help!

One day I may get one... Just bought a house this year that needs some work... The risk of owning a money pit is just too high..
Wow, you truly have a major mis perception of unimogs. But the fact is that if you buy a ragged out one, like any other truck they will cost you, but if you buy a decent unit upfront you may never have to do anything but change fluids. The low maintenance cost of my mogs is far cheaper than any Land rover I have owned.

Agreed. A nice well cared for Unimog could run just fine. But I don't have the $$$$ kicking around for such unit. Also please keep in mind that I came here to do my homework I have also worked on them for many years, owned a (very nice!) 404S and have driven many thousand km in 1300L Ambulance Mogs.. In other words, I did some intense research/ calculations and came to a conclusion.
Sometimes I wish that I still live in Germany... Sooooo many affordable Unimogs to choose from. Actually I think I would go with 4x4 Sprinter van... In any case, I'm very thankful for all the replies and private messages I receipt.

Cheers

I know of a 416 that was for sale in Ontario for 27,000, but now is reduced to 25,000.00. No camper mounted, but it is a Doka, and its orange if that's what you like.
It has the 20 spd cascade, and new xm47's mounted and from the pics, it might have a new one as a spare, but if not, it has a spare. Might be had even cheaper ?
Its registered, certifiable and plated. The validation sticker on it shows it just expired this summer in July or June.

its been in there 3 or 4 times that l know of
l was going to go look at it because bike nights in port perry is past where he is at
and l thought l would stop in on the way through to give it a look see.

pics can be very deceiving to its mechanical condition, and the body to at times.
this unit is one of 2 that is very intriguing to me. :)
