I got pulled over for tints in a nearby suburb. The cop was diggin' the ride and only gave me a citation.
Here's the question. It says I have to present proof that I have removed the front tints within 21 days or I will recieve a fine of $30, on the 36th day if I don't pay it will be increased to $45. Couldn't I just send them a check for $30 and keep my tints?

That just sucks! How dark are they, anyway? Any stay of any length that I have had in that blue state was less than enjoyable. Right down to the "right to work" raodsigns and Union advertisements in every cornfield.

Very dark. Limo tints.
I assume the fine is for not showing up for the inspection, and if I don't show up, how do they know if I removed them or not. It's all about the money here. Speeding is a crap-shoot. You could be doing 80 and a cop will fly by and give you a dirty look for going too slow but at the end of the month when it's time to make moolah, they'll pull you over for doing 58.

Those fines are so trivial that provided you don't get points on your driver's permit,I would pay the fines and keep the tints.That's what I hate about the pigs-as if they don't have something better to do than bitch about the colour of your windows.Wankers.[!]

It is a safety issue. German law allows for a tint light enough, so that a following car can monitor the traffic further ahead. Here, following most cars with tinted windows is no different from driving behind a truck. You can't see what is going on in front of it. Cheerio, Horst K

It is always a bugger - I avoid tints for that exact reason - the laws are different everywhere. For example I live in one province, workin another (just have to cross a river) and both have different laws.

625 ILCS 5/12-503 (2005) Windshields must be unobstructed and equipped with wipers.

(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle with any … tinted film upon the front windshield … or side windows immediately adjacent to each side of the driver. …

(b) Nothing contained in this Section shall prohibit the use of … tint … on windows to the rear of the driver's seat, except that any motor vehicle with a window to the rear of the driver's seat treated in this manner shall be equipped with a side mirror on each side of the motor vehicle … .

(j) A person found guilty of violating paragraphs (a), (b), or (i) of this Section shall be guilty of a petty offense and fined no less than $ 50 nor more than $ 500. A second or subsequent violation of paragraphs (a), (b), or (i) of this Section shall be treated as a Class C misdemeanor and the violator fined no less than $ 100 nor more than $ 500. Any person convicted under paragraphs (a), (b), or (i) of this Section shall be ordered to alter any nonconforming windows into compliance with this Section.

I think tint is illegal because cops can't see what the occupants are doing during a traffic stop. It is for cops safety.
I guess they want to see if you are pulling out your MAC-10 or putting out your blunt as they are approaching you car!

When i had tint i kept it lighter in the front and limo in the back. I thinks is unwritten rule that if its teh lightest tint possible (10%?) in the front then you are making an effort to comply with the law.

Seriously - especially when you can get a police issued twelve guage with a pistol handle and a maglite up front. We are talking Mercedes Benz after all!

I've driven for a year with no problems. For the record, it is only my side windows that are tinted and not the rear. Due to the antenna being imbedded in the rear windscreen the only tints I could put there are the cheesy non-metallic type that turn purple.
Granted, if a ticket were issued I would have to comply however this is merely a citation for, I presume, beer and bait money for the Sheriff of Arlington Heights' next fishing trip. I'm going to send a check and stay the hell out of that not-so-sleepy little burg.
