My idler pulley is bad. Is this something I can do myself or is there special tool/s required? It seems pretty straight forward. Can anyone please advise?

stupid simple.

step 1, release tensioner and remove belt.
step 2. remove bolt from idler, remove idler
step 3. bolt on new idler
step 4. put belt back on.

This should take about 15 minutes at most.

from the looks of your picture, it looks like the water pump.

Then again, it could be the crank pulley...on which there is a recall.

Tell us about the recall. Do you have a reference # or any details available? Thanks!

the recall was for all m112/m113 motors, but was centered primarily around the 210 E-class. I'm not sure if it will be covered on the 220, but it should be.

Took it to the dealer today. All the recalls were done. Crank pulley was done in 2005. It has a little 'play' in it but they said should be good for at least a few months.
