I recently bought a 1986 300 SDL. A light that looks like an upside down light bulb with an exclamation point inside has come on while driving. Any ideas what this light indicates?

This is the "Exterior Light Failure" indicator...one of your exterior light bulbs is out, or of the wrong type, or in the process of going out. If it is the brake light or a turn signal, then this light will only come on when applying the brake or using the turn signal.

I know but the car did not come with one. I am trying to locate one on Ebay, but so far no luck. I have ordered the workshop manual, I think that will help a bit.

Yup, it has an owners manual on the CD as well
