MB Dealers will honor the paint guarantee and fix your rust spots as part of the good will campaign
:surrender::mad:Well, I decided to sell my first Benz, a 2000 S500 with 89K miles after 3 months of ownership and repairs. I basically bought this car with known issues which I managed to repair on my own but the rust made me get rid of it. After taking the car to multiple body shops, none could guarantee the rust removal for more than few weeks. One shop even refused the work and said I would be disappointed when rust comes back. I was hoping I can get at least a 3 year warranty on the rust and fresh paint job. I was told I need to replace the doors and trunk lid for guaranteed rust free work.
My doors were rusting on the bottom as well as the trunk lid. I figured I would buy the car and fix it up including getting a new paint job and clean up the minor rust as I saw it but the rust was much worse than I thought. I was surprised to see how many problems people were having with this car and not just with the 2000 model but even with the 2005's with low miles.

I must say that this car was an amazing ride but I most likely will never buy another Benz again. I know my first Benz was an old car with many miles and I should not expect too much but it should have never rusted this way so fast. I had older Chevy cars that were driven on Chicago's salty roads and they did not rust at all compared to Mercedes.

The Mercedes airmatics is junk and not made for cold environments. I guess the newer models are improved but I still would never trust them.

Anyways, good luck to everyone else who has these cars.
To me it sounds like you bought a POS, couldn't afford to make it right, and are now sour on MB technology because your POS was broken.

My 2005 has zero rust, anywhere, has zero airmatic issues, and runs like a champ.

You picked the wrong way to enter benz ownership, so enjoy your rust free chevys.
Sounds like it was under water...did you check?
Isn't the rust warranty good for 15 years with all MB's?
I have a 2001 in Canada and our winters are crazy, Drives great in the snow, No rust and mint condition. I take care of it when it needs it and do preventive stuff just to make sure I have only myself to blame if something goes wrong. As the airmatics, I did not even know what they were until I had it drop and came in here but I have spent very little on and for this Mercedes for what it has to offer.
It seems like alot of people have bought a troublesome s class car recently. I just dont understand how some one would dislike it. It is by far the best car i have ever sat in or driven for that matter. And me being 17 i have drove a good amount of cars for the year of experience i have driving . The Benz is my favorite car because of its look and performance. I had mines for a month and a half and i never had 1 problem. NOT 1. But if i was to read all these negative posts i would have never purchased one. I have 4 family members with s classes 03 or under and other than regular maintainence they had to do nothing else. May be my car is just blessed but i believe once you are up to date with all the services and upkeep the car will drive like the dream it is.
Sorry to hear of your loss Detcomm. I am also a relatively new first time owner of a 2000 S430. There was a bit of rust on my trunk lid but the dealer I bought it from fixed the rust before I would buy the car. I felt they did an excellent job on the paint/rust repair.

As some of the other posters have noted, I am also concerned with the air matic suspension. It rides fantastic, but if it breaks down, :( Yikes!!
Otherwise, I love this car!! I had always been a truck guy and this caliber of luxury, even on a nine year old car is almost breathtaking! I recently sat in a brand new Dodge at a Home Show and was disappointed by the plastic and cheap cloth seats. That car cost 10 grand more than my Benz cost!

Would you be willing to reveal how much you lost selling your car after only 3 months of ownership? I have wondered what would happen if I were in a similar situation, and I had to bail my car... :crybaby2:

Good Luck,
Harfend
Rust is a common problem on these 2000 - 2001 Mercs. Mine is a S500 2000 Reg. I had rust on all four wings and boot lid as well. Fortunately, this was covered under Warranty by Merc in a 20 - 80% scheme. Still i had to pay around £1.5k GBP to get it fixed.

But despite the issues, i still love the car. This is the best i have driven so far.
