Saw the new ML500 at Maggiano's last night with MFR 44 plates

It was dark but valet'd right in front of the restaurant. Very nice but did not have that awe effect I was hoping for. kind of blends in with other 2006 SUVs. Still a Mercedes but certainly does not thrill me like seeing an S, SL or E. I like the w163 better. The w164 will have to grow on me. Surely more enjoyable when you are driving it but the looks are not stunning and rather "play it safe" in my mind. They hit a single that might turn in to a double if you run fast enough.

Anyone out there drooling over the w164? Yet to find one who is.

Where did you get a LIFE SIZE picture?
A little resizing may be in order!

If you ask me they look nothing alike:

Unibody vs. frame

Body on frame is traditional for hard-core off-roading. But Jeep and others have had good results with unibody. The big advantages of unibody SUVs are lower weight, more rigidity which allows better suspension tuning and ride comfort, and better crash pefromance.

It's not a loading problem, your picture is so big that it distorts the thread so people have to scroll to the right to read the words!

OK ... this is directly from Mercedes, this looks as much like the KIA as a Porsche 911

You've been staring at your computer screen too much - go get an eye checkup!

I met Blackhawk today--nice guy. But, if he thinks the ML looks like a Kia, I don't agree with his judgement. Yeah, squint really hard and there are similarities (Koreans have been copying Germans for some time), but the details and engineering are on a totally different plane.

All cars look alike if you focus on a small enough piece, or look at them from far enough [:D].

Sorry - I had to something post after seeing my current post count [:)].

Sweet! An 11 degree departure angle and 13 degree breakover angle. This thing will kick the Grand Caravan's ass on the trail any day! [8D]

Plus the ML500 is gonna come standard with the Chrome package and pimpin' 18" wheels. [:0]

It's obviously not oriented for hard core off-roading. Hopefully, the off-road package will include more appropriate wheels/tires and other enhancements. It will have the ability to raise over 4" (110 mm) which will improve those angles.

The ML is aimed directly at the heart of the market (X5, GX, LR3) which calls for a light truck that can do light off-road (still better than car-based utes). Most people, muyself included, need a vehicle than can haul a bunch of stuff, tow a trailer, handle snowy roads, pull a boat up a ramp or go on unpaved roads while still carrying five.

To make it a great trail vehicle would destroy many of its other qualities. If you dis it for not being one, you don't understand its mission.
