First test will be to see if it goes away upon emptying the trunk.

Post Service, Same Problem

Sway bar link or empty weight watcher drink bottle.
I just had the left rear axle half shaft replaced in my '79 107.026 SLC

Know I have the same clunk, almost like an oil canning sound, coming from the rear end, and there is suspension bushing that is squeaking like crazy now!!

ANOTHER $261.00 down the drain that just should have done myself to know it is right.

As it stands now, I get to go in behind the guy and see what he screwed up!!

Let me know what yours turns out to be, and I will do the same!!

I had also mysterious rear clunck when driving over the "lying policemen". Last weekend I noticed my spare tire was not tightened into its place. Easy fix, no more strange rear cluncks.

Maybe something loose in the spare wheel well.
Exhaust mount broken. The swaybar links are kind of flimsy.

I finally had a day off where it didn't rain (I SO want a garage) and I wasn't bogged down with a hundred other errands so I took thirty minutes to jack it up and take a gander underneath.

Here's what I saw. First, while looking from behind the tire toward the front of the car, there were these scratchy marks on the wheel edge, accounting for the screechy noise that was becoming more prominent in left turns.

I couldn't see anything making contact so I moved around to the front of the wheel and looked toward the rear.

Bingo.

Winnar, winnar, Timmy's dinnar! I can't wait to see what you'll get to buy me.

$17.50 at GermanStar. Send your beer caps to TLoPL. Thanks.

Dunno. With the limited miles that I put on the car, does it matter? Another online vendor wants about $25.

I wish my clink was that simple Dave!

Mine started after I paid a local Indie to replace my left rear half shaft.

Nothing appears loose after the visual i gave it doing the rear brake job.

I am at my wits end on this one!

JetPaul, if you look closely at the FSM, you'll find a discussion on different length axle bolts and spacers. When you get a reman halfshaft, it usually comes with the longer spacer. If your car originally had the shorter spacer (like mine did . . . which I found out AFTER returning the shorter spacers with the cores . . . DOH!) and you install a longer spacer, you end up with a loose halfshaft. My guess is it might clunk. Might be worth checking out whether the halfshaft is firmly pulled into your wheel bearing.

I wonder if I can just pop it back on and swell it a bit with some well placed whacks from a BFH?
