Hi - welcome to the W209 forum.

What you have circled here is the Electric Air pump (M33). This is used to pump air to the exhaust side of the engine during start up, effectively for emission control reasons. Either side are two Air shut-off valves used when M33 is switched off by the ME-SFI control unit. (often called the CPU).
