I have a 1973 220 Diesel, unfortunately I've broken a blade on my engine cooling fan - the one attacked to the water pump.

On my car there is no fan clutch; the fan has 4 blades and 4 bolts (photos attached). Apparently this was a very rare fan design because although I can find many fans of similar vintage and design none that match.

The part number on the fan is 108 205 09 06 - does anyone have a clue where to look? Has this design been superseded somehow and I need to switch the water pump too? As I said I can find similar size fans with 3 or 6 holes but not 4.

The shroud is easy to find.

I had a '73 220D which I drove for years using only the electric fan mounted in front of the radiator. This is in Tucson where it gets a tad bit "warm" in the summer time. Never had a problem.

I currently use a '74 280C as my daily driver using an electric fan and my wife's 250C (it has a M115 engine in place of the M130) uses an electric fan also.

Get rid of the bladed fan.

I do still use the clutch fan on my '85 500 SEL. Haven't quite convinced myself the fan is capable of cooling the M117.

I was able to find a replacement fan after trolling the internet I found a few possibilities my by then my local MB dealer had found one (at the same price ~ $100).

MB Classic Car center says the part is available.

As for the electric fan - sure I could have run without a fan and when the coolant reached 212(f) the electric fan would come on. Or I could wire the electric fan to be on all the time. That idea did cross my mind but under normal driving the electric fan does not come on that often (yes, it is noisy enough to hear over the engine - which is saying something) so having it only come on the normal way would make it run hotter and having it always on I suspect might burn out the fan eventually.

I'm glad they could find the right one and I fear the next piss ant part that breaks and it impossible to find.

Thanks - but I was able to get one, a new one which is installed but I wonder if it shouldn't be framed and on my wall -- they're very rare you know...

I know what you mean. I have tubs full of rare parts for the W115 I have, the fan blade I've have has been around in storage for a while now. Well, if you know anyone that may need one, let them know I have one with the spacer as well.
