Talking with MEREX and Schussler I have learned a few more bits of information.
The experience in Germany is that these units are very reliable, they are not super common and the electronics are the hardest parts to come by, pumps and motors are around here and there.
The unit I am getting is out of a U1600 and has been completely rebuilt including transmission with working and crawler gears. MB installed the smaller unit in the U1600s even thought they have a higher HP than the U1300 which specs the bigger motor and pump.
Also interesting, at least to me, is that the only difference between the units is the pump and motor, so you could swap those parts out if you needed to. I don't think that would be necessary, but I suppose if I were to have issues with the output of the unit I am getting I could look into that as an option.
The transmission should be here middle of January, I need the truck to be up and running until the snow is gone so I won't be doing the swap until the spring...lots of time to really get to understand everything and perhaps install some of the ancillary equipment related to the hydrostat first.
